Martin Luther King Jr. was absolutely a card carrying member of the Republican party. Remember at the time Democrats had members like Byrd (a Card carrying member of the KKK) and George Wallace. Few self respecting members of any group desiring equality would associate with them.
The first KKK was strongest in Tennessee. The second Klan, the KKK of the 1920s, was strongest in Indiana, where even the governor was reputed to have been a member of the secret organization and was elected with strong Klan support.
