Sara Lee
Sara Lee was 8 years old when Charlie Lubin, a bakery entrepreneur, decided to name his new line of cheesecakes after his daughter, Sara Lee. His company was purchased in 1956 by Consolidated Foods, where Mr. Lubin continued to serve as a senior executive for many years. In 1985, Consolidated Foods changed its name to Sara Lee Corporation. Although Sara Lee has never had a management role at the corporation, she has appeared in some television advertisements for our bakery products. In her words, her father told her the product "had to be perfect because he was naming it after me." Today Sara Lee is a philanthropist who spends most of her time supporting the education and advancement of women and girls in science.
This is a case where it was a real person, rather than a made-up name. "Sara Lee" was originally a Chicago-based bakery owned by Charles Lubin. He named it after his daughter, Sara Lee.
not without a lawsuit
To my knowledge Bimbo purchased SARA LEE Bakery division, which was primarily the bread and rolls production portion of the company.. There was some issues regarding too much bread brand ownership by Bimbo (BBU) by the Department of Justice, so BBU had to sell off the Sara Lee plants in portions of the Northeast US, Oklahoma City and the all of California. BBU is the largest bakery company in the world, and sells a variety of bread and related products under many brands. Boboli and Thomas's English muffins, for example. BBU bought all of the Sara Lee bread production in the US, then turned around and marketed those territories that were in dispute. Ultimately, Flowers Foods agreed to purchase the disputed assets. Flowers, the second largest bakery company in the US, owns Tastykake and Nature's Own, among other brands. It took a long time to get the transactions completed, and there are still several steps to go before everything is finalized as of this writing in Oct 26, 2012. Sara Lee has been selling off many of its holdings and has streamlined its operations over the last few years, concentrating on Jimmie Dean, meats and frozen divisions.
The Sara Lee Corporation offers a wide range of consumer food related products, mainly in the US , their product ranges include bakery, beverages and meats.
Yes. They completed the purchase of the Sara Lee's Fresh Bakery in 2011. The purchase was announced in November 2010 and was complete a year later.
