The main and the most possible way of the addition of acid to the atmosphere is from industrial factories. Burning certain compounds also adds acid, for an example, burning of vulcanized rubber results in the addition of sulfur dioxide. When these acid vapors are dissolved in rain water, it is called an acid rain.

Acid rain follows the course of normal rainfall, ending up in groundwater, streams, lakes and so on. The "acid" part gets weaker due to diffusion with normal rain and by reacting with materials such as carbonates.

Is air pollution a result of acid rain?

Air pollution can contribute to the formation of acid rain. When pollutants like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released into the air from sources like cars and factories, they can react with moisture in the atmosphere to form sulfuric acid and nitric acid, which can then fall to the ground as acid rain.
