The US Coast Guard learned of the accident shortly after it occurred. The Deepwater Horizon drilling rig issued a distress signal. At the time of the accident, the Damon Bankston, a work boat was pulled up next to the rig, and was used as to coordinate rescue operations before the US Coast Guard cutter could get to the accident.
