Taiwan is very small and compact. Almost everyone in Taiwan is from the same background, speaks the same language (either Mandarin or Taiwanese) and eats the same food, unlike United States. Socially, Taiwan people are very stand-offish, socially shy and non-trusting of outsiders. They are introverts and workaholics, working 6-7 days a week. They are money-based and find their value from their occupation. (But I guess that is a little similar to US.) They base friendship on duty and value (not on likability or commonality.) The women are more modest and shy and usually only date seriously (for marriage.) They value their family's opinion in choosing a marriage partner, and occupation and finances are two of the most important credentials. Taiwan puts high importance on education, but only as far as getting good test scores to get into college. Some people say Taiwan people are robots to school and work with no freedom of expression or personality. Although the US does put importance on education and work, I think that the US also puts importance on self awareness, discovery and adventure. Americans are direct and quick to get to the base of the problem. Some people are workaholics and defined by their occupation, more people put importance on freedom of expression in being who they want to be, satisfaction in a career, family values, spirituality, and helping their fellow man. Just my opinion.
