Assuming this is an upright vacuum, lift the light assembly on the front of the main unit. Rotate the big mechanism on the front to dislodge the belt. Now you can turn the lever that holds the nozzle assembly in place . After removing this section, you can see the motor shaft. This is where you attach the hose assembly. But, if you want to vacuum the stairs using the beater brush, then you would just push the pin out where the handle attaches to the base and install the small handle in its place. Disconnect the top of the bag from the long handle and reattach it to the small handle. I hope either of these suggestions work for you.
