I went to England a while back and shopped at a place called T.K. Maxx. It was a lot like T.J. Maxx—I honestly questioned my reality until I returned to the US. Are these places the same store? What is going on?
Don’t worry, you’re not going crazy. In the UK, Ireland, Germany, Poland, Austria, the Netherlands, and Australia, TJX Companies operates T.K. Maxx stores; in America, they operate T.J. Maxx stores.
Why the K? Well, there’s only room for one TJ in England, and that honor goes to department store TJ Hughes. When T.J. Maxx stores (founded in America in the ‘70s) grew popular enough to expand across the pond in 1994, they simply swapped the J for a K to avoid confusion.
The stores are pretty much the same. Writers from Business Insider went to one of each to compare them, and aside from some region-specific brand differences and T.K. winning in the cleanliness department, the shopping experience was the same.
