The best place for a thesis statement is at the end of the introduction, if any. It should be in the first paragraph. It's important to precise that that first paragraph has to be the introduction; in that way, nobody should be confusing because we also have the first paragraph of the body.

There is no such thing as one thesis in a story, there are many. Each thesis has to revolve around one theme (the theme can change through thesises). In "Charles", some of the themes are poor parenting skills, attention, change, lying, etc. Come up with your own thesis around these themes.

Students attaining their PhD or Doctorate degree tend to need help researching various aspects for their thesises. Professors must also research on a regular basis in order to keep their professor status and pay. If you are interested in doing professor work you can balance both teaching classes and doing research on the topic of your choice. This compiled information is then presented to a group of colleagues and can be turned into a book. Occasionaly the university itself will purchase these books to be used as teaching material in the college courses. Research is also highly valued in the media market to see societal and consumer trends.
