usually there was live music eg. piano scores put over the top or played when people came to watch it. Sometimes they had the scene clip then written dialogue came after... but that was mostly when it was in black and white and the dialogue had to be pretty basic because you wouldn't want the audience to sit there for time on end reading the entire script.
