There are many instruments of the lute family in India. There's the vina, thought to be the oldest musical instrument in southern India, but this is more of a zither than a lute. It is long, thin and usually has two gourd resonators underneath it, with 2-4 melodic strings and three unstopped drone strings. Next is the sarod, the most lute-like of Indian instruments. It is descended from the Arabic rabab and is unfretted. It has 4 melodic, 2 drone and 11-16 sympathetis strings. The next two are the most widely known and heard, the tanpura and sitar. These are the traditional instruments of an Indian ensemble. The tanpura has four strings and a long fretless neck. Its sole puropse is to unify the ensemble (tabla, sitar and tanpura) with a drone. The sitar is a large instrument like a bigger tanpura, but with moveable frets and 8-13 sympathetic strings. It also has five melodic and two drone strings. The repertory for the sitar is huge, made known by virtuosos such as Ravi Shankar. There are other lute-based instruments in India, such as the mayuri or surbahar, but these are much lesser known deviants of the main instruments mentioned.

The tambura is a long-necked plucked stringed instrument. The body shape of the tambura somewhat resembles that of the sitar, but it has no frets - only the open strings are played to accompany other musicians. It has four or five (rarely six) wire strings, which are plucked one after another in a regular pattern to create a harmonic resonance on the basic note, and creates a drone sound. It is held upright in front of the musician who is seated. The musician steadies the instrument with one hand and plucks with the other. While not a difficult instrument to play, it is designed to accompany other instruments (such as the sitar or sarod) and never played as a solo instrument.

Overall, the number of keys will vary, depending on the number on keys the harpsichord have. For a single manual harpsichord (one keyboard) each key has 2 strings. Since most harpsichords have about 5 octaves that's a total of 120 strings.

Now some harpsichords have 2 manuals, and for those it's around 240 strings.

The tambura, tanpura, or tambora is a long-necked plucked lute (a stringed instrument found in different forms and in many places). The body shape of the tambura somewhat resembles that of the sitar, but it has no frets - only the open strings are played to accompany other musicians. It has four or five (rarely six) wire strings, which are plucked one after another in a regular pattern to create a harmonic resonance on the basic note (bourdon or drone function).

Tamburas come in different sizes and pitches: larger "males", smaller "females" for vocalists, and a yet smaller version is used for accompanying sitar or sarod, called tamburi or tanpuri. Male vocalists pitch their tonic note (Sa) to about C#; female singers usually a fifth higher. The male instrument has an open string length of approximately one metre, the female is three-fourths of the male. The standard tuning is 5-8-8-1 (sol do' do' do) or, in Indian sargam, PA-sa-sa-SA. For ragas that omit the fifth, the first string is tuned down to the natural fourth: 4-8-8-1 or Ma-sa-sa-Sa. Some ragas require a less common tuning with shuddh NI (one semitone below octave sa), NI-sa-sa-SA. With a five-string instrument, the seventh or NI (natural minor or major 7th) is added: PA-NI-sa-sa-SA (5-7-8-8-1 )or MA-NI-sa-sa-SA (4-7-8-8-1).

The name tanapura is probably derived from tana, referring to a musical phrase, and pura which means "full" or "complete". Both in its musical function and how it works, the tambura is unique in many ways. It does not partake in the melodic part of the music but it supports and sustains the melody by providing a colourful and dynamic harmonic resonance field based on one precise tone, the basic note or key-note.

India is a land of cultural diversities. Every region in India has its own form of folk music. This rich tradition of folk music is very much alive in not just rural India, but also in some metros. Though one may say that music has acquired a totally different definition with the arrival of pop culture and new age cinema, there are many who would beg to differ. The realm of traditional folk music in India is very large and it is basically a countryside representation of the urban Indian society. Many people tend to mix up Indian folk music with tribal music. There is a huge difference between thee two genres of music. Read on to know about folk music of India.

Folk music is very different from classical music as well. To begin with, it is not taught in the same way as classical music is taught. Classical music usually requires a student devoting their entire life perfecting the forms of this music. Folk music is more like a daily ritual without affecting the daily lives of people. People learn it since their childhood and grow up on these songs. One can always carry on with their daily life routine while listening to or singing folk music. Most of the songs are sung in small village functions like weddings, births, etc.

Folk music also uses a number of instruments. The refined versions of these instruments are used for classical music. For instance the "Tabla", which is a very important instrument of classical music, is used in a crude form like daf, dholak or nal. The cruder versions of Sitar or Sarod are used in folk music, which are known as ektara, dotar, saringda, rabab and santur. Not all regions use the same instrument. In fact, the same instrument may not even be called by the same name every where. Most of these instruments are made of easily available material like bamboo, clay pots, empty coconut shells, etc. Most of the folk music in India is dance oriented and many popular forms of dance like Dandiya, Lavani, Garba, etc. are danced along the tunes of popular folk music. They are very enjoyable, as most of them very catchy tunes.
