US combat engineers call themselves sappers, so yes the 37E has sappers.

That answer isn't necessarily true. Not all Combat Engineers are considered "Sappers." There is actually a "Sapper" school, which is sort of the "Ranger" school for Combat Engineers. Yes, there ARE Sappers in the 37th Engineer Battalion but only because they have sent people to Sapper School, which is also located at Ft Leonard Wood, MO, just like the Combat Engineer AIT training. Trust me, I was there. I also was in the 37th Engineer Bn. and I went to Sapper School.

The petard was the first 'shaped' explosive charge, used by a Mining Engineer (colloquially 'sapper') to precisely direct a blast onto a single point, like a lock or door hinge, when mining toward a defended structure during a siege. It was shaped like a squat cone and because of this shape, concentrated a small charge so well that the sound of the blast rarely carried through the door to the defender. This enabled the sapper to use such a small charge that he could remain quite close to the spot. So close, in fact, that it was conceivable that a sapper might be 'hoist by his own petard' if he was a bit of a show-off. First printed reference was in Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' III.iv.207 "For tis the sport to haue the enginer Hoist with his owne petar"

During the Vietnam War, US Marine snipers used non-semi-automatic rifles and operated as scouts (reconniassance/military intelligence) as part of their sniper function. US Army snipers used the XM-21 weapons system (M-14 rifle). Priority targets were always key personnel: Leaders, radio operators; more often, for the US Army, the mission(s) consisted of eliminating "sappers". The "term" SAPPER was introduced in WWI for men digging tunnels under fortifications and destroying them with demolitons. In the Vietnam War, the "term" SAPPER was used for enemy personnel (enemy commando's) infiltrating into a US Firebase (crawling through the barbed wire perimeter), AND for enemy personnel planting Soviet/Chicom (Chinese Communist) made land mines. US firepower within the FIREBASE "almost" always terminated the infiltrating "SAPPER" (enemy commando). The remaining "Sapper", whose mission was planting Soviet/Chicom land mines, was normally operating on some distant dirt or paved highway well away from the Firebase. US Army snipers were often sent to wait it out, on those isolated roads, and to terminate them.
