check your carborator cause those are known to go bad on honda's and cause that problem and if its not that then its your vacuum line

Over reving the engine, ( to many RPM )

The rocker arm nuts need replaced ( The locks are worn out on the nuts )

The rocker arms are worn where they set on the valve stems.

Need to check everything closely.

Trany shot this is usually caused by excessive wear and abuse ( such as reving the engine and dropping it into gear at high rpms) or mileage exeeds mechanical limits. However it has probably been abused!

If you crawl into the tail pipe while the engine is reving at full throttle . . .

Try replacing a bulb or the fuse BEFORE you crawl into the tailpipe.

If by tick over you mean when should you shift, then it depends on how much torque your engine is producing. You will discover as you drive that shifting between 5000 and 6000 rpm assures maximum torque from the engine. Mazda does recommend reving the engine near redline (approx. 8500 rpm) several times a week to eliminate possible carbon buildup. I personally love the feeling of shifting at approximately 6500 rpm to keep it in a lively range. Remember rotaries love to rev, and reving it high (above 7000 rpm) is actually good for the overall health of the engine.

the kick of is around there just get your ecm chip then you can go up to 135 mph its super sweet make sure you get the right chip or youll be reving at 10 rpm LOL have fun
