The number of Para. Inf. Regt. varied during the war. In Normandy, the 82nd A.B. Div. had three, the 505th, 507th & the 508th Para. Inf. Regt. In addition, there was the 325th Glider Inf. Regt. For the combat jumps in Sicily & at Salerno, the 82nd, had only two Para. Inf. Regt., the 504th & the 505th.

THE ROYAL SCOTS (THE ROYAL REGIMENT)(1ST OF FOOT)

The Royal Scots is the oldest Regiment of the Line in the British Army.

As part of the BEF, the 1st Battalion Royal Scots suffered heavy casualties covering the retreat to Dunkirk, and many were taken prisoner.

Mr Brown is correct, John Hepburns Regt.formed in 1625,later called the Royal Scots, Royal Regt. of Foot in 1633,was serving in France and Belgium, and at Dunkirk. But the questioner asked about the Scots Guards. The Marquis of Argyll's Royal Regt.1642 was disbanded and later re-formed as the Scots Regt. of Foot Guards in 1660,(also known as the Kings Regt.) in 1940 the 1st.Batt.was in Norway, then Tunisia and Italy.

2nd. Batt.were in Egypt, then Libya,Syria and N.W.Europe.

3rd.Batt.(armoured) were in U.K.'til 1944 then N.W.Europe,they converted back to infantry role in 1945.

4th. Batt.was a holding Batt. in U.K. 1940-43.

So I would think that the Regt. did not serve at Dunkirk.

My father won the military medal in the retreat from Holland, as I understand some of the Scots Guards may have retreated into Belgium then France and therefore would have been evacuated from Dunkirk

PVT 2 PROV REGT is actually two different things, not a single statement. "PVT" is short for the military rank of Private, and its inclusion on the headstone means that the soldier buried there was of Private rank at the time of his death. "2 PROV REGT" stands for 2nd Provisional Regiment, which is pretty broad term without any specific meaning as it is provided here (unless there were other words or letters following 2 PROV REGT that weren't included above). Regiments are simply large military units made up of two or more battalions totalling generally several thousand infantrymen, and the 'Provisional' simply means that it was a temporary unit that was formed in response to and disbanded with the resolution of the armed conflict at hand. The 2 does not offer any other clues either, as military units always carry numbers and these numbers are repeated widely. I hope this was some help, and if this wasn't quite what you were looking for I wish you good luck in your search.

No, women can not join the RAF Regt because it is an infantry force: currently, women can serve in all branches the UK Armed Forces (including aircrew, artillery, combat engineers, intelligence, military police etc) EXCEPT those whose primary role is "to close with and destroy the enemy" - ie Infantry and Armour.

Many female RAF personnel serve on attachment to RAF Regt units (eg intelligence, logistics, communications, medical, and admin specialists), but they can not be members of the Regiment.

There could be many reasons. If the city is occupied by the enemy then it is necessary to remove them.

In December 1943 Hitler had ordered the German 1st Parachute Regt to hold the Italian City of Ortona at all costs. This was holding back the advance of Canadian troops and the Germans were attacked by the Seaforth Highlanders and the Loyal Edmonton Regt. The Fallschirmjaegers were heavily dug in through the city and it took 8 days of vicious fighting to remove them. -The Canadians suffered 1,375 dead and over 900 wounded in this single engagement of 8 days.

Tec 5 was the soldier's rank. This was the same as a corporal, with two stripes (really chevrons) with a capital "T" below. The holder of the rank was usually referred to as "corporal" and the pay was the same as a corporal. The "tec" was for some type of training in a technical specialty. Because the rank was "technical" the holder of the rank was not entitled to command troops as a regular corporal might. It incates the man had a specialized, technical job.

HQ 2 MED TNG REGT is Headquarters, Second Medical Training Regiment. This was a unit that trained soldiers to serve in themilitary medical system. See related link below.

normally at the Regt level the highest ranking Docter would have been a Colonel or LT. Colonel. At the battalion level, you would have most likely encountered a Captain or a major at the most. Due to shortages across the board it was common for Captains to be commanding Battalions and majors to be incharge of Regiments.

Longest and arguably the hardest in the western world is Roal Marines Commando. With over 300 years of history behind them and the distinction of having never lost a battle they are at the forefront of the worlds miliitary elite. Also to beconsidered would be Parachute Regt. One could also argue the IDF seeing as though they have been at a near enough constant state of war.

Yes however they tend to use explosive rounds

All snipers may use explosive rounds - depending on the targets!

The RAF Regt has snipers - they do exactly the same selection & training courses as British Army snipers.

Answer:

Explosive rounds?

No.

The RAF Regiment uses the Accuracy International L115A1 rifle chambered for .338 Lapua Magnum rounds. These rounds are NOT explosive.
