You're referring to a "lasso", right? From Spanish: "lazo"

What you are probably thinking of is a 'reata'. It is a Braided Rawhide Reata Ranch Rope

Traditionally used by Spanish and Mexican vaqueros, these reatas are the original rope used by cowboys. The craft of braiding a reata is one that has been passed on from one generation to the next and is quickly becoming an endangered art and skill. Handmade with 4 precisely cut rawhide strips braided together. Offers exceptional strength and durability. They are usually 5/16" in diameter and 60 feet long. Cowboys still use them today on ranches and you can tell by looking at their saddles (even though a rope may not be present on the saddle) if they use one because they will have mule hide wrapped on the saddle horn or it may be slick metal. Rodeo cowboys have rubber wrapped on their horns because they use shorter ropes (usually of 30 to 35 feet long)...which causes greater friction and they don't have to take as many turns (dally) to stop or turn the cattle or horse.

Those cowboys that use a reata have to take many turns (dally) to stop or turn the cattle or horse and they may have to 'feed some coil' before they can turn or stop a 'steer' or cow out on the range. As you may imagine...like braiding a reata, using one is also an art form that is carried out still today on many ranches. I've been there, done that, genuine antique cowboy!

You can also buy a 60 foot rope in poly or nylon...which is more common today and a lot less expensive than a hand braided reata.

Hope this helps out.

A stiff rope called a lariat, a riata or reata. The stiff rope is designed so that the loop remains open when thrown so that it can catch cattle via head or feet. Most lariats today (particularly the California or Arena-styles) are made of stiff polyester or nylon rope, but others (including the much longer riatas) are still made from rawhide (mostly braided, but can also come twisted like many ropes are), Mexican maguey (or agave), or cotton. California-style lariats are range in size from 28 feet to 35 feet long, and the Mexican riatas range from 50 feet to over 100 feet long.

Great differences exist between the two cultures and styles of stockmanship. To say both are the same, would be akin to saying Mexicans and Spaniards are the same. Vaquero/Buckaroo horsemanship is a light-handed, more humane method of work than that of the traditional cowboy. A cowboy will use his horse to work cattle, whereas a vaquero/buckaroo will use the cattle to work his horse. Often, the mode of dress between the two can be one form of identification between the two. The equipment used in doing the same work is another way to differentiate.

Buckaroos tend to prefer a shorter form of legging, called chinks. There is also a more natural and less flashy type of legging used, called Armitas. Cowboys tend to prefer the more gaudy batwing chaps or some for of shotgun chaps. Cowboys can be distinguished by the synonymous hat that we see throughout the modern western culture and throughout Hollywood! Buckaroos tend to prefer a more flat-crowned and flat-brimmed hat. Buckaroos often like the use of a rawhide reata, instead of the nylon and/or poly rope. The longer, the better for buckaroos. Buckaroos also prefer a more flashy and larger style of spurs than do their cowboy counterparts, as with their bits too. Buckaroos prefer a more ornately decorated spade bit, which takes a long process and years of horse training to get to, whereas cowboys will utilize a more simplistic curb bit or something similar!

Saddles have many differences between the two cultures as well! Cowboys utilize a more generic, western-style saddle from which they can rope from. Buckaroos employ what is referred to as a Slick Fork Saddle, one with a larger Mexican or Californio style horn, which lends itself to better dallying and more ease of use.

These and many more differences exist between the cultures. It is unfair to both to say they are the same. Do voice such an opinion would belittle all that each culture has worked for and worked toward in order to preserve their own history.

For more information on the subject of Buckaroo and Buckaroo lifestyle, these Google searches are recommended: Great Basin Buckaroo; The Californios; Buckaroo Horsemanship; Buckaroo Lifestyle; Ranch Roping; Buck Brannaman; Martin Black; Vaquero Fiesta.
