Fascist Italy was loosely aligned with the Western Allies up until 1935. As well, Italy controlled and continues to control the German-speaking South Tyrol region that they annexed during World War 1 from Austria - the fear was that if Germany gained Austria they would push for a return of the entire Tyrol.

They stopped supporting an independent Austria (which was unpopular in Austria at the time) after a detente was reached between Hitler and Mussolini.

The Great Lent Periot (the 40ish of fasting before Easter) was established in the calendar of the Chruch during the ecumenical councils in Nicaea (modern day Turkey). Under Emperor Constantine of Rome, the several fragmented churches from around the empire united together and devisded a calender. The fourty days of lent were put into the calender to commemorate the sacrafise of Jesus Christ.

Typically, according to ancient and strict readings, followers who particiapte in traditional lent, abstain from food or waters containing alcohol, oil or animal product (with the exception of fish on some occassions). However today many people simply give up something or some behavior they consider dear to them such as video games, popular shopping destinations, or a favorite dfood. This is done to remind christians about the importance of sacrafice and the cleansed feeling it brings to the soul.
