Scribes were among the most respected workers in ancient Egypt. Following the religious god Thoth, they are depicted in hieroglyphics as having used wooden palettes, brushes, pens made from Nile reeds and rolls of papyrus. Scribes in training practiced on a substance called ostraca, which is a piece of easily attainable pottery or stone that was less expensive to make. Red and black were the primary colors of their ink, typically made of a mixture of soot, gum and red oxide.

Hieroglyphs could be written in rows from right to left (the most common way), from left to right, or in columns vertically downwards. Scribes writing on papyrus would usually write in rows across the page - this was how pupils were taught to write on ostraca (broken pottery) before they were permitted to use papyrus.
When writing inscriptions, particularly those with pictures and scenes accompanying them, scribes were taught to arrange the text in an artistic and pleasing way around the figures, animals and other elements. In a narrow, vertical space it makes sense to have the text in columns, but where there is plenty of space the text can be arranged in rows.
Often, around doorways or in formal religious scenes, texts are arranged on each side reading in opposite directions like the wings of a bird - either in columns or rows. The idea was always to be tidy, compact and balanced. This was just a part of the ancient Egyptian idea of the "right way" to do things, embodied by the goddess Ma'at, which is why Egyptian hieroglyphs remained virtually unchanged for over 3,000 years.

Simply Put No. The name Jehovah is the accepted English translation of the name Yaweh which is the closest known pronuciation of the Divine name. And as we know in the lords prayer, Jesus first prays "our father in the heavens Hallowed be thy name", it would be impossible to do this without using it. The Name Jehovah is rejecyed by some who prefer to use Yaweh, Yaweh is an acceptable form of the divine name however Jehovah is the English tanslation, much like Jesus is the translation of Yeshua.

Clearly, Yahweh (Jehovah) was the dominant God for the Israelites, whom scholars regard as the early Israelite weather god or storm god. The dominant goddess was Asherah, who was apparently the consort of Yahweh. The next most important god in Israel was Baal. Excavations at the city of Samaria produced over a hundred ostraca (inked notes on sherds) dating probably from the first part of Jeroboam II's reign (roughly 770 BCE). The notations on each contain all or part of a range of information: a date referring to the king's reign, a place of origin, one or more personal names associated with a product, and the nature of the product (wine or oil). These are mundane records, but the personal names of Samarian residents is of great interest. The majority are Yahweh-compound names, but a large minority of them are compounded from the divine name Baal.
The Bible refers to other gods worshipped in Israel and Judah but, being written much later by adherents of the Yahweh-only party, usually attribute their worship to foreign influence. There are biblical references that suggest the Israelite worship of the sun god and moon god. Ezekiel 8:14 describes women in the Jerusalem Temple 'weeping for Tammuz', the shepherd-god and lover of the goddess Astarte or Inanna.
Keel and Uehlinger cite Lang, translated from German: "In the four and a half centuries during which there were one or two Israelite monarchies (ca. 1020-586 B.C.), there was a dominant, polytheistic religion that was indistinguishable from that of neighboring peoples. Insofar as there were differences between the Ammonite, Moabite, Edomite, Tyrian, etc. versions of religion, these beliefs stayed within the framework of Near Eastern polytheism, and each should be interpreted as a local variant of the same basic pattern. The Israelites . . . venerated their own protector god who was there to provide for health and family. But they venerated Yahweh [God] as well, the regional and national god, whose special domain dealt with war and peace issues."
Even in post-Exilic times, there are clear references to Wisdom, who was seen as a spirit to be venerated, if not as a goddess (eg Proverbs 1:20ff: "Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets: She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying, ..."). Some scholars believe that Wisdom was the pre-Exilic goddess of wisdom.

There is some uncertainty as to whether the biblical United Monarchy known as Israel ever existed. Israel Finkelstein (Archaeologies of the Middle East: Critical Perspectives, Archaeology, Bible, and the History of the Levant in the lron Age) says that archaeology shows absolutely no sign of a great tenth-century territorial state ruled from Jerusalem.
On the other hand, the short-lived northern kingdom of Israel did no doubt exist. It was finally destroyed by the Assyrians in 722 BCE.

Many Biblical verses were doubted due to lack of outside evidence, and were later substantiated by archaeology. Accordingly, researchers should have an open mind, viewing obscure verses as being potential pointers to as-yet-undiscovered finds.
Some examples of archaeology corroborating Bible verses:
1) Until recently, no evidence outside the Bible attested to King David's existence. Many critics questioned his existence. In 1993, an archaeologist named Dr. Avraham Biran and his team, digging at Tell Dan, discovered a black basalt stele, containing Aramaic inscriptions. Two of the lines included the phrases "The King of Israel" and "House of David." This discovery has caused critics to reconsider their view of the historicity of the Davidic kingdom. In 1994 more pieces were found with inscriptions referring to Jehoram, the son of Ahab, ruler over Israel, and Ahaziah, who was the ruler over the "House of David." Dr. Hershel Shanks of the Biblical Archaeological Review states, "The stele brings to life the biblical text in a dramatic way."
2) At one time the 39 kings of ancient Israel and Judah were known only from the Biblical books. Some critics charged fabrication. But then came to light the royal cuneiform records of many Assyrian kings, mentioning the kings of Israel and Judah, including Omri, Ahab, Jehu, Menahem, Hoshea, Pekah, Hezekiah, Jehoahaz, Jehoram and Jehoshaphat.
3) The Assyrian king Sargon was known only from the Bible account (Isaiah 20:1). This Bible verse was discounted by critics as of no historical value. Then excavations revealed the ruins of Sargon's palace at Khorsabad, with many inscriptions. Sargon is now one of the best known of the Assyrian kings.
4) In 1934-39, excavations were conducted at ancient Mari on the Euphrates River (present-day Iraq). They found that ancient towns were named after the ancestors (Genesis ch.11) of Abraham:
The "city of Nahor" was found near the city of Haran which still exists to this day. Equally clear signs of Hebrew residence appear in the names of other towns nearby: Serug (Assyrian SARUGI), Terah (TIL TURAKHI, "Mound of Terah"), and Peleg (PALIGA, on the Euphrates near the mouth of the Habur).
5) The critics claimed that the Babylonian captivity never happened.
However, in 1935-38, important finds were made 30 miles from Jerusalem at a site thought to be ancient Lachish. Lachish was one of the cities recorded in the Bible as being besieged by the Babylonians at the same time as the siege of Jerusalem (Jeremiah 34:7).
Twenty-one pottery fragments were found in the latest pre-exilic levels of the site. Called the Lachish Ostraca, they were written during the Babylonian siege. Some of them are exchanges between the military commander and an outlying observation post, vividly picturing the final days of Judah's struggle against Babylon.
Since the 1930s, there has been more unearthing of Babylonian texts describing the conquest of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar. The historical fact of the Babylonian captivity is now firmly established.
6) The Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III shows Jehu, king of Israel, bowing before the Assyrian king.
7) Tablets from the time of Tiglath-Pileser state that he received tribute from Jehoahaz of Judah. This is the full name of Ahaz (2 Kings 16:7).
8) A limestone relief from Sennacherib's palace at Nineveh shows the siege of Lachish.
9) The cylinder of Nabonidus, last ruler of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, shows that his son Belshazzar was co-regent with him (Daniel 5; 7:1; 8:1). Scholars had previously scoffed at Belshazzar's very existence.
The above examples are among many thousands. Dr. William Albright, who was probably the foremost authority in Middle East archaeology in his time, said: "There can be no doubt that archaeology has confirmed the substantial historicity of the Old Testament."

The Torah tells us about the genealogy of the Hebrews (esp. Genesis ch.10 and 11), their language, their beliefs, their laws, their lives, and the milieu in which they lived. All kinds of bits of information are there, from how people swore oaths (Gen. ch.31) to how Egyptian officials were instated (Gen. ch.41).
