Following protests after Mexico's 1-0 win over Cameroon, FIFA announced they had dismissed assistant referee, Humberto Clavijo (Colombia) on 20 June 2014. The decision was due mostly to Clavijo's controversial disallowing of two Mexican goals in the match, ruling both offsides. After reviewing replays of the match, FIFA admitted both decisions were mistakes on the official's part. Clavijo has been the only official dismissed thus far.

Other officials that have been protested against include:

  • Yuichi Nishimura (Japan) - controversial decision (in Brazil 3-1 Croatia) by calling a foul on Brazilian striker, Fred, by Croatian defender, Dejan Lovren, for minimal contact. This led to a penalty goal giving Brazil a 2-1 lead. FIFA defended Nishimura's decision.
  • Enrique Osses (Chile) - failed to call a clear foul (in Italy 0-1 Costa Rica) on Costa Rican striker, Joel Campbell, by an Italian defender. Costa Rican staff and supporters claim they should have received a penalty shot.
  • Peter O'Leary (New Zealand) - wrongly disallowed a Bosnian goal (in Nigeria 1-0 Bosnia and Herzegovina) and subsequently allowed a Nigerian goal in which Nigerian striker, Peter Odemwingie, committed a foul on a Bosnian defender in the process. As a result of Nigeria's questionable win, Bosnia and Herzegovina were effectively eliminated from the tournament.
