In the pilot episode it is mentioned that Opies mother died when he was "just the least speck of a baby". We learned Barney was the best man at the wedding and Andy was very much in love with his wife. We never learn her name or much more history. We also know Barney is Opies godfather. Some have specualted that maybe she died during Opies birth but their was never proof of that info in the series.

He did not have a caretaker. He lived with his Pa and his Aunt Bee in the house in Mayberry. His Aunt Bee watched him while his Pa was doing his sheriff thing at the courthouse. Otherwise, Andy Griffith took care of the little guy.

The Captain of the Cornelia Marie is still Tony Lara, the same Captain at the end of season 7 who took the boat out for opies. Capt. Tony has been overseeing the rehaul and rebuilt of the boat for the past year. They just finished up putting down a new deck and are hoping to see how the CM does out in the open sea during the season this year (2012).

Jakes' sister. Jake, part of the f/v Northwestern, was told that his sister, Chelsea Dawn, had passed away in hospital. Captain Sig received a call from Nicks wife while out at sea, saying that Jakes' mum wanted Ncik to tell him.
