Werewolf is a near-direct translation of the word lycanthrope making them synonymous. The term lycanthrope derives from the Greek words lukos meaning wolf and anthrope meaning human or man.

IDK, but there is a word for werewolf "lycanthrope".
* EDIT: Lycan. This is a werewolf that can control itself. Lycanthrope is the full form of this word, however most people simply use "lycan". FYI, Einstein-with-the-first-answer, "lycanthrope" starts with the letter "L". Don't say that you don't know and then answer. That's dumb.

A Lycanthrope can be many things. But to me, A Lycanthrope is a person who has advanced (under force of will) To connect with an animal spirit (such as a wolf) and force the human body to use itself in ways not normal to humans. You probably will not grow fur or fangs, but your mind will change and use itself in an unnatural way.

Werewolves come out when the moon is full.
There are three categories of werewolves: Shifters, Were-shifters, and lycanthropes. Shifters have the ability to become any animal they choose, but they must have seen the animal in order to become it. On the full moon, a shifter will have difficulty maintaining human form. They will either become the last form taken or the most frequently taken form. A Were-shifter is similar to a shifter. A Were-shifter can only shift to one animal form. Such as, a were-tiger can shift into a tiger. A lycanthrope is the most commonly known type of werewolves. A lycanthrope is a person who was bitten or scratched by a lycanthrope. During the day a lycanthrope is human and by night it is a wolf. A lycanthrope may not know it is a lycanthrope, because its night activities will seem like dreams. However, if a lycanthrope realizes it is a lycanthrope, it may be able to train itself not to shift. The exception being the full moon, because all lycanthropes shift on the full moon.
Werewolf transformations are triggered right before the night of a full moon, a full moon, and the night after the full moon.

Lycan is a werewolf, and is a shortened version of "lycanthrope". It was first discovered in Greek Mythology, werewolf meaning Man Wolf. Several ways to become a lycanthrope, AKA moonlight therian, including wearing a complete wolfskin belt pacing in the moonlight, cooking soup including wolfsbane and eating it for dinner, (Probably doesn't work o.O not many want to become one.) and sleeping in full moonlight on a full moon. Lycans normally have a sickness called lycanthropia... I don't think that's right but I will update you.

If you should attempt to purposely become bitten by a werewolf(lycanthrope) you will fail for werewolf attacks are accidents and only accidents. Even if you happen to come across a lycanthrope and become mauled there is a very very small chance that you will survive. The best location to find werewolves though would be Wisconsin, CA.
