The Church introduced lectors in the mid 1960s in preparation for the change from Latin to the vernacular. Originally, the lector would read the Epistle and Gospel in the local language at the same time the priest read them in Latin at the altar. Prior to that the priest would read the Sunday readings in Latin and then again in the local language from the pulpit. Once the language change was made, lectors continued to read the first and second readings and the priest would then read the Gospel.

Catholic AnswerThe priesthood itself did NOT change after the Second Vatican Council, however, the role of the laity expanded, and many things which had previously been reserved to minor Orders and which, in practice, were done by priests, were now given to the laity. Lay people became sacristans, acolytes, lectors, ministers of Holy Communion, etc. Well, they didn't become those things, they just started taking on their jobs which had previously been done by priests as there were few ordained acolytes, lectors, sacristans, and ministers of Holy Communion outside of seminaries and monasteries.

In the Roman Catholic Mass, the priest reads the Gospel which is taken from Matthew, Mark, Luke or John in the New Testament part of the Bible. Before that, lectors read twice (once on weekdays) and it's from any book in the Old Testament, often Isaiah or the Psalms. To Christians, Jesus is the fulfillment of the promises God made to his people in the Old Testament through prophecies.

Within the Catholic Church, there are various lay positions such as catechists, lectors, and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion. These roles allow laypeople to actively participate in the Church's mission by spreading the teachings of the faith, proclaiming the Word of God, and assisting in the distribution of the Eucharist. By serving in these positions, lay members help to strengthen the community, deepen spiritual growth, and support the overall ministry of the Church.

Roman Catholic AnswerThere are many different terms that refer to people who work for the Church. You may be referring to the clergy who actually run the Churches, this would include the Bishop, assistant bishops, priests, and deacons. Also there are religious who serve in different capacities in many parishes: Religious Sisters and Brothers. There are numerous lay people who work in an average parish, those who take care of the buildings: cleaning staff, maintenance people; the office: secteraries, business managers; education: teachers, catechists; people who actually help with the Liturgy: Music staff: cantors, organists, choir members, altar boys, lectors, commentators, etc.

While women cannot be ordained in the Catholic Church, they can still fill any other role of a lay person. They can become extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist, lectors, teachers of theology, altar servers, etc. Some diocese have even appointed women to be the chancellor of the diocese - the right hand 'man' to the bishop, a position traditionally held by a senior priest.

Well, honey, in a Catholic Mass entrance procession, you'll typically see the altar servers strutting their stuff first, followed by the lector who's ready to read the Word, then the deacon looking all important, and finally, the priest leading the pack like the diva he is. It's like a religious runway show, darling.

An acolyte was originally a special position in the Church that was given through minor ordination from a bishop to a candidate aspiring to the priesthood. The acolytes specific duty was to assist the priest at mass and hold the candles during the reading of the Gospel. In modern times, due to seminaries being instituted, strict acolytes were no longer available in local parishes. As a result, the men of the parish were given the tasks the acolyte would usually perform and thus the archaic term acolyte has become synonymous with "altar server". The modern acolyte is to assist the priest at Mass by doing all tasks peripheral but supporting of the Sacrifice of the Mass. Acolytes lead the priest in, carry books and implements to their needed locations during the service, transfer items, present the offerings for the sacrifice, assist in the purification of the priest's hands and holy vessels, hold the candles during the Gospel and lead the priest out after Mass.

The Catholic Church does not discriminate between men and women. If you mean 'Why do Catholics not ordain women as priests?" that is not discrimination as it is following the example set by Christ. The first priests He ordained were all men. Tracing back to the Jewish roots of Christianity, men were always priests. The question should be 'Why do some non-Catholics not follow the example of Christ by allowing women to serve as ministers?" If Christ wanted women to be priests, He would have set an example for us by ordaining his own mother, Mary Magdalene or one of His other female disciples. He did not. So, if this is discrimination, ask Our Lord about it. He made the rules, we follow His example.

God did not design men as capable of bearing children, only women can do that. Is that discrimination? Was God being unfair?

Women now serve many roles in the Church including some high diocesan positions. Women are now allowed to serve as lectors, ministers of hospitality and Eucharistic ministers. Young girls are allowed to serve as Mass servers.

A word describing sometimes an ecclesiastical dignitary, sometimes an administrative or ceremonial officer. Anciently, the precentor had various duties: he was the first or leading chanter, who on Sundays and greater feasts intoned certain antiphons, psalms, hymns, responsories etc.; gave the pitch or tone to the bishop and dean at Mass (the succentor performing a similar office to the canons and clerks); recruited and taught the choir, directed its rehearsals and supervised its official functions; interpreted the rubrics and explained the ceremonies, ordered in a general way the Divine Office and sometimes composed desired hymns, sequences, and lessons of saints. He was variously styled capiscol(caput scholæ, head of the choir-school), prior scholæ, magister scholæ, and primicerius (a word of widely different implications). Victor of St. Hugo tells us that in the care of the primicerius were placed the acolytes, exorcists, lectors, and psalmists (chanters). In the Middle Ages the principal dignitaries of cathedral, collegiate chapters, and monastic orders, imitated the example of St. Gregory the Great in acting as directors of chant-schools. The schola was always in attendance when the bishop officiated in his cathedral, and to the precentor was assigned a place near the bishop and high in dignity. His office was obviously one demanding much learning and executive ability, and his dignity corresponded with his duties.

Roman Catholic AnswerAt its most basic, there is only one - The Christian faithful. But that one can be divided into two, 1) the Ecclesial ministry (the clergy) and the 2) Laypeople (the Faithful. Both of these groups contribute to the Religious vocation, we have both religious priests (monks, friars, and other religious who are ordained as Bishops, Priests, and Deacons) and the Laypeople who contribute people to be ordained to the priesthood, and others who continue as religious laypeople - nuns, sisters, and brothers.

The Ecclesial ministry can be divided into Bishops, Priests, Deacons, and the minor Orders (Acolyte and Reader). We should probably stop there as you now have five: Bishop, Priest, Deacon, Minor Orders, Lay people. Someone else might divide it as Pope, Bishops, Priests, Deacons, and laypeople.
