Before 1814, this is when The Kingdom of the Netherlands was grounded, the people in the western part of nowadays Netherlands called themselves Hollanders. Since most foreigners met only sailors from this area they believed everybody living between Germany, France and the Northsea were Hollanders.

So Holland became a part of The Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1814, there are still 2 provinces in the western part of the Netherlands called North-Holland and South-Holland, which are the 2 most important provinces based on the amount of citizens and global companies, Amsterdam the capital is in North-Holland, Rotterdam with the greatest harbor in the world and The Hague, the city where the government is settled are in South-Holland.

They generally don't prefer Dutch. Most "Dutch" people refer to their country as themselves as 'Nederlanders' for the people and 'Nederlands' for the language. Since Dutch (the language) is 'Nederlands' in Dutch and the people are 'Nederlanders' in Dutch. Another reason to call them like this is to avoid confusion with the Germans and the German language (Deutsch).

They also generally don't prefer that the country is called 'Holland' or that the people are called 'Hollanders' and that the language is called 'Hollands'. Since that's not correct and is more an offensive.
