License codes ( not to be confused with Morse), such things as call letter- which are all in alphanumeric form- like commercial stations- WBAI-99.5 FM ( actually that"s a non-com or Underground station but illustrates the point. Hams used to make up trick verbal codes such as (I"m pulling this out of a hat- say it is Radio 0844 PSG- well this might be talked out as O 8 4 4 Pea Soup George. This was part of the fun, as while amateurs had to use the frequencies assigned (like phone numbers)- there was some latitude for things like Pea Soup George. ( promininent actor Andy Devine was a one-time Amateur operator and he used the call signs- number first ( I don"t know the number) but Red Eyed Rooster- for the cipher RER. Incidentally musical jingles- anything like ( Ringtones) are and were de-factoi forbidden- as all music transmission on Ham wavelengths is ILLegal. -and this is a stock question on FCC exams.

The Ham test is done to diagnose paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). The test checks whether red blood cells become more fragile when they are placed in mild acid.

Alternative Names

Acid hemolysin test

How the test is performed

Blood is typically drawn from a vein, usually from the inside of the elbow or the back of the hand. The site is cleaned with germ-killing medicine (antiseptic). The health care provider wraps an elastic band around the upper arm to apply pressure to the area and make the vein swell with blood.

Next, the health care provider gently inserts a needle into the vein. The blood collects into an airtight vial or tube attached to the needle. The elastic band is removed from your arm.

Once the blood has been collected, the needle is removed, and the puncture site is covered to stop any bleeding.

In infants or young children, a sharp tool called a lancet may be used to puncture the skin and make it bleed. The blood collects into a small glass tube called a pipette, or onto a slide or test strip. A bandage may be placed over the area if there is any bleeding.

How to prepare for the test

There is no special preparation needed for this test.

How the test will feel

When the needle is inserted to draw blood, some people feel moderate pain, while others feel only a prick or stinging sensation. Afterward, there may be some throbbing.

Why the test is performed

A positive test can confirm the diagnosis of PNH.

The Ham test can also be used to diagnose another rare disorder called congenital dyserythropoietic anemia.

Normal Values

A negative test is normal.

What abnormal results mean

Abnormal results may be due to:

  • Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria
  • Congenital dyserythropoietic anemia
What the risks are

There is very little risk involved with having your blood taken. Veins and arteries vary in size from one patient to another and from one side of the body to the other. Taking blood from some people may be more difficult than from others.

Other risks associated with having blood drawn are slight but may include:

  • Excessive bleeding
  • Fainting or feeling light-headed
  • Hematoma (blood accumulating under the skin)
  • Infection (a slight risk any time the skin is broken)
Special considerations

The HAM test is increasingly being replaced by a newer test called flow cytometry.

Ham usually consists of ham. Ham comes from the pig. It can be a whole section of the pig, such as a leg. Or it can be processed from bits and pieces of ham and pressed in a mold to make a canned ham or boiled ham that is for sale in grocery stores. Have you ever seen a pig that had a canned ham shaped leg or back end? Now you know why.
