Software Management:

• Virus Scan - PC slow down can be caused by a virus. Try downloading an Antivirus or Internet Security software suits. These will help protect your PC from any harmful viruses. There are many Antivirus software available online for free. You can download them and run a full scan. If threats have been found, delete it right away.
• Disk Cleaner - Disk Cleaner is a software that cleans hard disk(s) for any excess files that the computer holds. Disk Cleaner deletes old configuration files, caches, cookies, or any excess data. You can also run a free disk cleaning software on windows. Go to "Computer" and click properties. Then hit "disk cleanup".
• Disk Defragmentation - Hard Disk Drives can be easily fragmented. Bits of files will be scattered on the disk sector causing the Hard Disk to read each files slowly. By defragmenting disks, it will arrange data to the disk for maximum reading speed.
• Installed Programs and Files - Too many programs can slow down your computer. Hard Disk takes time to read each sectors of the disks. Try to uninstall any unused programs on your computer.
• Formatting - You can try formatting your hard disk. It can help the HDD to read files quickly. Warning: Reformatting your hard disk will delete all files and folders. Try to back up first before formatting.

• CPU - CPU is the brain of the computer. This is where all the process exist. CPU with higher processing time (MHz or GHz) will make your computer process files faster.
• RAM - Random Access Memory is the temporary storage of your computer. If the computer runs out of RAM, it may not hold the variables in a program and this can crash your machine.
• GPU - GPU are Graphics memory and processing units. This is where the video is processed. The better the GPU, the faster it will process graphics.
• Hard Disk - Hard disk takes time to read each sectors of it. If the hard disk is full of programs and files, Hard disk will attempt to search each sector for a specific data to be processed and perform.

In order to avoid all this type infections from the internet please remove the temporary files from the computer daily.

Please use the following method to remove those temporary files.

1. Press "Windows" and "R" keys simultaneously on your keyboard.

1. In the text box in the Run window, type %Temp%and click OK. A folder full of files and other folders will appear.

All of the folders and files you see in this Temp folder are no longer being used by Windows and can safely be deleted.

1. To remove individual folders or files, hold down your Ctrl key while left-clicking on each item you want delete. Release the Ctrl key when you're finished.

To delete these items, hit your Delete key or choose File and then Delete from the menu.

Go to www.download.com and type in Glary Utilities. Do the 1-Click Maintenance with this software. This is a spam free program and also free to use. It will clean up your computer first and then backup your files for safekeeping.

Third, if you "reformatted" from the bios, then you didn't reformat, you most likely just recreated the partitions, but did not format them. They would be visible as C: and D:, etc. but you wouldn't be able to write to the drives at all. As in the first answer above, boot to a DOS disk and format that way. You should be fine from there.

With great reluctance, and a great deal of bad language. The best thing I can suggest is that while you're thinking of it, and don't really have to do it right this moment, is to look in the help files, print out what you think you won't remember, and make a boot disk on floppy and keep it where you'll remember it. Please anyone who needs to "re"format their computer--- DON'T! If you don't know how to format a hard drive you probably don't know how to boot an OS into your system. Just because you have a Win98 CD don't mean you have to do it every time you have a problem!

If you find you must reformat and reinstall the OS, ALWAYS REMEMBER TO BACK UP YOUR DATA first !!

Always back up data before problems arise. But after reformat and new install of OS You might need drivers that came with computer or was factory install. I have 2 cds that I made that has all the drivers my system needs. Don't count on your OS to have the drivers. Some of your answers are great for a system that is running, but what if He/She is replacing HARD DRIVE. That floppy reboot disk looks mighty good right about now. Plus not all of us ran out and bought full XP version. You need to install 95 or 98 first if got the service pack. Don't forget the pesky extras, like printers, Laser mouse, Ethernet cards, if your using cable then theres more software. Helps to burn all these to a CD, plus might not hurt to open notepad or word pad and jot down those pesky passes needed for like my cable provider that's needed. I only use these when doing install. But might not use that for long periods and get forgetful.

Please anyone who needs to "re"format their computer--- DON'T! If you don't know how to format a hard drive you probably don't know how to boot an OS into your system. Just because you have a Win98 CD don't mean you have to do it every time you have a problem!

If you find you must reformat and reinstall the OS, ALWAYS REMEMBER TO BACK UP YOUR DATA first !!

Always back up data before problems arise. But after reformat and new install of OS You might need drivers that came with computer or was factory install. I have 2 cds that I made that has all the drivers my system needs. Don't count on your OS to have the drivers. Some of your answers are great for a system that is running, but what if He/She is replacing HARD DRIVE. That floppy reboot disk looks mighty good right about now. Plus not all of us ran out and bought full XP version. You need to install 95 or 98 first if got the service pack. Don't forget the pesky extras, like printers, Laser mouse, Ethernet cards, if your using cable then theres more software. Helps to burn all these to a CD, plus might not hurt to open notepad or word pad and jot down those pesky passes needed for like my cable provider that's needed. I only use these when doing install. Pirate Bay is a "search" engine or "directory" for torrent file's. The site itself cannot be renounced as safe though as it hosts a list of third party viruses and deadly pop ups. Then with that comes the viruses and trojans of torrents. You never can be quite sure whether a torrent is safe or not, so it is best to listen to the comments of others as they will report viruses and quality of a torrent. Remember that most torrents listed on thepiratebay's server are not affiliated with it and can be uploaded by anyone and may be illegal to download (Copyright infringement)

The Pirate Bay is not 100% safe, but it is the best around. I have been using their site for years, with pretty extensive AV coverage, and have not noticed anything. The Pirate Bay did have an issue with a virus on their homepage a while ago, but that is done with. I RECOMMENDED DOWNLOADING ONLY AUDIO FILES FROM TORRENTING SITES. I cannot stress that enough. There are virtually no negative side effects of torrenting audio files, no viruses, and the RIAA has stopped suing everybody and their mother.

On the contrary to the last post, the reason that the fake "Anti-Virus" has been installing itself on visitors is because it is from pop-ups that come up when you enter onto the Pirate Bay. Therefore you do not even have to attempt to download a file to get the virus. I have spoken on many forums for opinion from veterans on how to counteract this and many people cited popup blockers (an advanced one such as adblock) but those have been verified not to work. I have also read that the pop ups were only for one weekend and that the problem has been fixed. To my chagrin, that is not true. The probably still exists presently (5/3/10)

This is also not confined to the pirate bay. If you use torrentpond, sumotorrent or some other smaller torrent sites, you will have the same pop up with the same virus (Anti-virus 2010). So steer clear. I have downloaded hundreds of gigabytes over several years and have never ever had a problem and consider myself about an 8 when it comes to computer literacy and expertise (out of 10), and have still yet to solve the problem. I do not believe it affects macs though, but I hate buying an overpriced hunk of junk with a brand on it that I can't even upgrade or customize. But if you have an apple, you may have lucked out when it comes to dling torrents.

So you ask "why install garbage viruses on peoples' comps?" To take from the movie "Wallstreet", "What is worth doing is worth doing for money." Unlike regular popups where the webmaster makes only makes pennies or less per pop up, a virus loaded on a victim's computer will net from $2.00 to $2.50 a person! That is a huge mark up. You screw over a ton of people who probably wont go to your site again, but you just made a ton of money (and they're hoping they can make up the traffic later claiming the virus is a "glitch" or something like that). There are actually a small section of advertising companies who specialize in this, and they change names and stuff all the time, for obvious reasons.

Anyways guys be careful because since the beginning of 2010, the torrent game is not how it used to be so if you want to chance it, back up your documents and keep a recovery CD or partition handy.

I would also like to point out that though I haven't really cared enough to work on a way to browse the site safely (I am sure something like safe mode browsing with no cookies and no pop-ups or redirects would probably do it), I do happen to repair computers for a living.

The virus is fairly easy to remove, AVG and Spybot don't remove it because their worthless. You want safety against this program, or almost any other bogus anti-virus, install "Malware-Bytes". It's free, you can even install it in safe mode. The first sign of a fake av like antivirus 2010, hard power down your PC, don't wait for shut down. Then boot in safe mode with networking. Afterwards, go into internet settings, turn off the bogus proxy that your fake AV installed, put internet connections back to "Auto Detect" (they will be changed to a proxy within seconds of getting the fake av, this is how the AV eventually downloads the whole program). Then make sure malware-bytes is updated, run a quick scan, that's enough, clear the program out. If you have had it a while and it's had a chance to download more, run the whole scan. Then use a program like "glary utilities" or hijackthis and do their "hijack recovery" to restore the settings the AV hijacked. I litterally caught the Antivirus 2010 on this computer 20 minutes before writing this, my computer is fine now, I haven't reformatted a computer I own because of a virus in well over a decade.

If you use a program like "peerblock", have it updated, and block http, the virus will not get through. If the virus has gotten through, when you change the proxy settings back, write down the IP of the proxy, add it to your firewall or peerblock to the blacklist, if you block the proxy IP, the worst that can happen is when the script tries to change it, you'll get no internet connection error, then just go take the proxy off.

Simply put, no.

If you keep your settings in a manor in which you avoid the installer all together, one good way is to not use an admin account, use a limited account such as a guest account and like the person below me stated, don't allow the addons or popups to run (addon most important). If it's too late and you already have a fake AV hijacking your computer, follow the steps I listed. If you have the infection there are actually very few AV programs that will remove it. I am sure there may be a couple out there, but none of what is known as "main stream". AVG, Avast, Norton, McAffe, Panda, etc. will remove it. Microsoft Security Essentials does not even remove most of them, though there are a couple it will which is more than I can say for the before mentioned big name ones. I've removed these things from computers with Spybot, Spyware Blaster, Ad-aware pro and many other forms of protection. If you protect yourself, you're "probably" going to be okay, and can even avoid the one from Pirate bay. If you're past that, give up your pride in holding onto whatever AV you're attached to, follow the steps I listed, and you'll be clean. Otherwise, you have a reformat in your near future.

As a side note, I'd considered using the "pro" version of malware-bytes, but I believe most of these fake AV's have an ability in them to detect your AV software, much like windows security center does, and have the ability to deactivate them. I use the Microsoft Security Essentials because it's light, fairly decent, and makes a great decoy. When the fake AV from pirate bay attacked my AV, it shut down MSE, but completely ignored Malware-bytes which is passive. So restarting my computer and running MB in safe mode was easy. Also, consider this, not many AV's or Fake AV's can actually run in safe mode, this is why I found that MB being able to install, run, and clean from safe mode was fairly impressive. As this system works and works very well, I've seen no reason to change it. Cleaning others computers, I've been exposed to all sorts of malware, spyware, viruses, you name it, I've never had one take down my system. I've had ones try, they all fail. My knowledge of other AV's is not from useage, it's simply from knowing those AV's to be installed on computers I am paid to remove viruses from.

I am on the PirateBay right now as I type this 12/18/10. I visit the piratebay weekly and I have never had a virus from there, however I did get one from ISOhunt (another torrent site) last year very similar to the one you have described. When I go to the site using IE the information bar reads: "POP-UP blocked. Also, to help your security Internet Explored blocked other content from this site. click her for options".

I never allow the add-on or the pop-up to have permission. I use SpyBots S&D browser Immunity feature and update monthly. All IE security settings are set to medium or medium high. I am guessing that is what keeps me safe. BTW I think the virus uses a vulnerability in flash. If not, I am fairly certain that Fake virus protection scanning screen is using a flash format and your player.

Install Web of Trust on your browser. (http://www.mywot.com) As each popup opens WOT blocks it with a warning if the site has a bad rating. You can then close the window with no ill effect to your computer. It's still annoying, but at least you're protected from malware.

In my experience, PeerBlock's "Block HTTP" feature does not stop these popups from appearing, although there's no doubt some protection there.

Lastly: Downloading an antivirus program from ThePirateBay to fight a virus you might get from ThePirateBay may not be the smartest path to take. You can get excellent free antivirus software from Microsoft (www.Microsoft.com/security_essentials) or Avast (http://www.avast.com/en-us/free-antivirus-download).

Another great program to use is K9 Web Protection. I use it to keep my Kids safe but it also blocks popups and Ads excellently. It also blocks potentially harmfull sites due to viruses or adware. It is a definite must have. I also would like to know if this question is about thepiratebay.se or piratebay.com

Defragmenting the hard drive if it is very fragmented can often speed up your computer. So can fixing registry problems. You can disable features and services you are not using. For instance, if you are not big into visual effects, you can disable most of them to get more performance. If you are not using a laptop or don't have "green" motivations, then you can turn off a lot of the power management stuff to increase performance.

You can also make some hardware changes too. If you can install faster memory or a faster CPU that can help. If you are running low on memory a lot, then you can add more memory so the hard drive won't have to be used for temp files a lot. Then you may want to install a faster hard drive such as a SSD drive at least for use as a system drive. You can also try adding a USB memory stick under Windows 7/8 to use for ReadyBoost.

A computer can be made faster by:

1. Defragging it regularly using Windows Disk Defragmenter.

2. Deleting the temporary files in the system.

3. Reducing the number of programs that start during windows start up.

4. Optimizing system configuration.

5. Adding more RAM (memory).

6. Upgrading the CPU.

7. Upgrading other components such as the graphic card.

Without spending money:

Eliminate all the extraneous software from your machine. Nearly everything you download these days wants to run an "agent" on startup. All it does is sit there and soak up RAM and CPU cycles. If your system tray (down by the clock) is crowded, get rid of as much of that stuff as you can. Additionally there are many gray-area malware apps (spyware adware scareware) which may or may not be picked up by your virus scanner

Below are links to a couple good programs for removing this stuff. First is "Malware Bytes," it will help you find any malicious or semi-malicious programs running on your machine and remove them for you. Second is "Decrapifier." It is intended to be used on a newly purchased computer and will help remove all the pre-packaged demo-ware which comes with new computers.

Be sure you have at least 10% free space on your hard disk and then defrag your hard disk. The defrag utility is in start > accessories > system tools. Or go to My Computer, right click on the drive letter in question, and go to properties. There you should find the defragger and the disk checker.

If you don't mind spending some money:

Adding system RAM can greatly improve the performance of any computer system. Its like putting a turbo-charger on your car, the engine is the same, but it produces a lot more power. You can never have enough RAM for Windows, and adding RAM is always a good way to get a little more performance out of your machine.

Upgrading your video card is also a good way to boost performance in 3d games. Modern video cards have come a long way in the last couple years and a decent 512mb card can be had for under $100.

Improving machines that once performed well:

If your machine used to run better, but is running slow now, your best bet is to do a few system-maintenence measures to speed things up a bit.

First, do a good spyware scan. Spybot Search & Destroy or Lavasoft Adaware are both excellent freeware programs which will scan your system for useless software and remove it automatically. Both are linked below.

Second, make sure you don't have infections. There are plenty of antivirus tools for this.

Third, see all that stuff down in your system tray (on the start bar by the clock), all that stuff is qeued up to run on startup and then just sit there soaking up RAM and CPU cycles. Go through those programs and through their prefs and tell them to stop loading on startup. Failing that, Spybot S&D also has an excellent utility for removing unwanted programs from the startup routine.

Fourth, optimize your operating system. Windows by default loads up all sorts of services that may or may not be necessary for your particular usage needs. I suggest searching for "Windows XX optimization guide" with XX as your Windows version for more info on what you do and dont need.

Fifth, and maybe this should be first. Unplug your machine, remove the cover, and blow out all those dust-bunnies. A clean computer is a cool computer, and a cool computer is free to operate faster.

How hard drives affect performance

Getting the most performance from your PC requires that all its components are operating at their full capacity at all times.

By far, the slowest component in any system is the hard drive, since it is mechanical and is in constant use (even if when only web browsing many pages download temp files to your system to access their content, causing items to be written and read).

Perhaps the biggest destroyer of hard drive performance is fragmentation, as having pieces of files and free space randomly scattered all over your disk necessitates a lot more disk action to write and later access the files than would otherwise be needed (even insufficient RAM boils down to slowed disk performance as the page file will have to be used more when RAM is low). Keep the HDD well organized. The HDD can be the culprit on an otherwise well equipped system. Be careful about downloading and installing the programs and defragment regularly to keep data access smooth. In fact you can even automate the task or get a defrag program that will proactively tackle fragmentation. Besides this, run a disk cleanup often and ensure your security updates are in place.

So while getting more RAM will certainly help (mainly because the disk will be used less until the RAM is used up), the real bottleneck occurs at the hard drive -- it's the weakest link in any system.
