Dogs are refreshingly free from all human hang-ups regarding personal space and body part taboos. They take in an enormous amount of information through their olfactory sense, much, much more than humans. It stands to reason that they will use that sense in any way they can to find scents that are distinctive and unique to various individuals. Dogs rely more on scent than on any other senses or cues. It may seem strange to us when dogs do this, but we need to understand that dogs are not people. They don't give a hoot what we think about their natural approach to the world. That part of a body produces scents that are distinctive, and so a dog is tuned in to that. Most dogs are not sensitive to color, so visual cues will be handled differently by dogs than most of us would think.

Say that you are going about your day and suddenly something brightly and vibrantly colorful comes into view. You will likely turn toward it and pay attention for a while. That's all dogs are really doing. What's interesting is interesting. Some dogs can be trained to indicate which urine sample out of several comes from a person dealing with cancer. THAT indicates the level of subtle and sensitive discrimination a dog can engage in using the sense of smell.
