A peck is a unit of volume, not weight. It is equal to 8 dry quarts or about 9.31 liters. The weight of cukes in a peck would depend on their size and density.

All cucumbers turn yellow as the ripen. The Germans use the ripe cukes for a pickle called a senf gerkin which is made with mustard. If you are going to save the seeds for next year, make sure that the cukes are ripe, since that's when the seeds mature.

Cuke is a short form of cucumber... The slang use of cucumber or cuke usually is about the subject being inexperienced. Since, cukes are green and a way of describing a newbie is as green like an unripened fruit.

Yes, you can plant cantaloupe by cucumbers.
They do NOT cross-pollinate as they are different species. Only species fof the same species or closely related species may cross. Non-species crosses are extremely rare and usually sterile.
Cukes and pickles cross with each other. Cukes do not cross with melons, canteloupe, honeydew, guords, squash or pumpkins.
Canteloupe and honeydew can cross.
Pollination doesn't affect the fruit of a plant because the genetics of fruit production is set in the plant which is grown from the seed of the previous year. Cross-pollination within species would affect the fruit of the seeds in the subsequent year. In other words, rogue pollination of your cukes by your neighbors nasty pickles would not affect you current year crop of cukes, but you wouldn't want to save and plant those seeds expecting the same variety as you will have a hybrid which may or may not even be similar in taste.

Cucumbers can be grown in your garden in nearly every state in the US, except Alaska and perhaps some of the northern states. Cucumbers for commercial production are grown primarily in the southern half of the mainland US. Cukes for fresh produce are mainly in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, New York, California, New Jersey, and South Carolina. Processing cukes (such as for pickles) are primarily in Michigan, North Carolina, Texas, Florida, Wisconsin, Ohio, and South Carolina.

I would not try that as the fruit gets really long and thus heavy. I think it would break off before it was anywhere near big enough to be worth the effort. Japanese cukes grow best on a trellis where they have support and stay clean

Quayhogs are hard or soft shell clams. They are eaten all over the world. They vary in size, some being up to 500 pounds and some documented to be 400 years old. How many in a pound? You figure it out. Charles R. Thomas, M.D.

If you dislike fish stay away from the sashimi as it is nothing but pure fish...no rice, nothing.
For sushi i would recommend "California rolls" (crab and mayo), "vegeterian rolls" (cukes and advocados usually) and some places will have sushi with steak rolled inside (obviously not traditional). And you can never go wrong with "dynamite rolls"!
Enjoy!

You can pick a cucumber anytime. If you are canning you'd pick them when they are small to make small sweet pickles for example. I pick them at anytime. Some gardeners believe that small veggies like squash and cukes taste better when smaller.

Cucumbers become pickles either by fermentation or through acidification. Fermentation will take too long, so acidification will likely be your best bet.
Acidification involves placing the cukes in a seasoned vinegar solution which can be salty or sweet. They also generally include a canning or hot fill process - unless you make refrigerator pickles. Small pickles, spears or slices will attain the flavor you're looking for more quickly. There are many recipes on the internet. See Related links for a sampling.

A cucumber will be ready to pick when it turns a shade of green that is a little bit lighter than one of a pickle. A cucumber is not a small vegetable, nor is it large, so when the cucumber is ready, it will be about the same size as a ripe squash. No offense to cucumbers, but when the are ripe, they tend to look plump and fat.

I have just thrown out 28 jars of dill pickles which had originally sealed in August
and somehow came unsealed in the last few weeks.
I have always sworn by Kerr lids (in fact I go to the U S A to buy them as we can't
buy them in Canada anymore)
I am very frustrated as I have been making pickles for over 30 years and have
never had a problem like this. Once a jar is sealed it always has remained sealed.
I am not only a lot of money as I purchased the cukes for $1.40 per pound
the lids for over $3.00 per dozen as well as the dill weed, garlic, vinegar and
pickling salt and there was a lot of work involved as well!

It will soon be high gardening season in south Florida. The fall and winter is when do most of the growing here and commercial production of veggies hits high gear. Just about any veggie grown in the spring in temperate regions can be grown in the winter and fall. Just for starts, how about a salad garden. Tomatoes, lettuce, cukes, carrots and just about any thing else you like in a salad are all easy and late Sept and Oct are usually good time to plant. If veggies are not your goal there are many fruit trees suitable for south Florida. Mango, citrus, avocado and carambola all a fruitful and easy to grow if you have enough room.

The snail and slug clade (Gastropoda) is a very vast class of invertebrates. They do not have a true "brain" per-se, but rather a group of ganglia. While it has not been conclusively proven that sea snails such as conches and abalone feel pain, there is evidence that Heterobranchia snails (such as the common garden snail) have nociceptors (pain receptors). In addition, fear conditioning and avoidance learning have been documented in snails of this clade.
That being said, "only the animal knows" if they feel pain, as we are unable to experience what they are experiencing at any given moment. It could be that pain is felt in a different way we are as of yet unaware of.

Cucumbers with their handle bar shape that makes them easy to grab, are much more than just an easy grab and go for a salad –and even more than a great low calorie salt-satisfying, crunch gratifying pickle treat.
Cucumbers may be thought of as a cool summer food, but actually are available these days year round and are beneficial in all seasons. As you might guess because of its shape and skin color, cucumbers are related to watermelon, zucchini and other types of squash—and each of these has its own special makeup, and that provides its own special power to your body. Cucumbers, more so than many foods, are beneficial with immediate results to both to the body’s outsides as well as the insides.
The Looking Glass Appeal for Cukes
For those concerned with weight management and how clothes fit, cukes are a staple to have around. For dieters dealing with calories, cukes are known as the next to nothing snack with 8 skinny calories a serving. They have zero fat, cholesterol, almost zero sodium but do contain the great vitamins C, A, K, and several essential body minerals.
The benefits of cucumbers for the eyes are not just fashion and foolishness but indeed, the vitamin C and the caffeic acid in cucumbers helps skin irritations and reduces swelling, so it is scientifically proven effective for puffy eyes, burns, and other skin problems. One of the most important nutrients in cukes is silica, which is an essential for healthy muscles, bones, and all connective tissues—that means it’s protective inside your body which becomes the healthy framework of your outsides.
The Great Cleanser
With our ever growing needs for fiber and hydration, cucumbers are a double great “yes” answer. Whatever the season, enough water is needed for your natural cleansing abilities. Especially after the holidays where we might have indulged a bit too often and then get caught up in a cycle of not so nutritious fast and junk foods…we often want to turn to some kinds of cleansing routine for the body to get back on the right track. Fiber and water are two body essentials, and are essentials because they are also natural body cleansers for your body’s filtration system and waste management system. Cucumbers give you great amounts of fiber---excellent for those with constipation problems so as not to bother with annoying supplements or bran that you want to hide in your cooking. With satisfying crunch, they possess astonishing amounts of fluid that is excellent washing through your system.
Health Studies, Pros and Cons
Cucumbers are loaded with potassium, magnesium and fiber, and in a recent study on high blood pressure, people who ate foods high in those 3 ingredients lowered their blood pressure significantly.
Beware, though that cucumbers at the market are often coated with a wax that is not recommended for healthful consumption. Best to buy organic, from a farmer’s market or check the labeling for notations on coatings.
Ways with Cucumbers
If you love blue cheese dressings and sauces but want to save some calories, stretch it and enliven these sauces with cucumbers. Make your own with some sliced cucumbers, chopped onions or green onions, a little olive oil, a little cider vinegar and some crumbled blue cheese. Smoothies are great for breakfast or on the run better nutrition than fast foods. Cucumbers make for the juiciest smoothies and add good body to any particular fruit color mixture you envision. Keeping it light and green, blend up 1 cucumber, 6 mint leaves, some green grapes, some apple juice, avocado slices for extra nutrients, and add a scoop of protein powder of your choice or a scoop of cottage cheese for a real creamy treat.
If you don’t want mint but want "pinkdelicious"—go for strawberries instead of grapes, and any red berry juice instead of apple.
For a delicious low cal, low carb side dish instead of stuffed mushrooms, do stuffed tomatoes stuffed with cucumbers. Cut a little off the tops of 3 tomatoes, remove the pulp to a bowl, turn the tomatoes over stem side down on paper towels and refrigerate 2 hours to drain. Chop the pulp with 1 cucumber, 1 chopped clove garlic, and 1/3 cup reduced fat mayo Instead of all the mayo or part of it combine some Greek yogurt with olive oil. Stuff you tomatoes and eat...no baking needed.
For your Asian taste buds, add chopped cucumbers to your rice dishes with some grated fresh ginger, a douse of apple juice to sweeten and some chopped onion and grated carrot. For great tasty snacking, keep in your fridge some sliced cucumbers sitting in a little vinegar and sea salt.
A Stress Buster!
The most touted and easiest gazpacho ever is blended quickly in the raw with a cucumber, tomato, green pepper, onion garlic and olive oil. This amazing gazpacho was part of a study done by a physician with the Nutrition Research Center of Tufts University. Individuals who ate this very gazpacho every day for 2 weeks not only increased their protective levels of Vitamin C in the blood, but also, their stress molecules were significantly lowered!

Most cucumber plants contain a bitter compound called cucurbitacin, which can be present in the fruit as well as the foliage. Bitterness in cucumbers tends to be more prominent when plants are under stress from low moisture, high temperatures or poor nutrition.
For some cucumber eaters, the bitter taste can be accompanied by a digestive discomfort known as a burp. Some of the newer cultivars of cucumbers do not have the bitter compound and, thus, no burp. So, some seed companies called their bitter-free cukes "burpless."
The amount of bitterness in the cucumber depends on the severity of the heat and drought. In most cases, cutting off the stem-end and removing the skin of bitter cucumbers will remove much of the bitterness. Some fruits will be bitter all the way through and should be discarded. Bitter cucumbers will not taste any better when pickled!
Watering during droughty periods to provide 1 to 1 1/2 inches of water in a single application will help keep bitterness out of subsequent fruits. Apply a mulch, such as straw, shredded bark or newspaper, to help cool the soil, conserve moisture and keep weeds under control.
Next year, your best bet is to plant bitter-free cultivars and provide optimum growing conditions, when possible. Many cultivars are listed as being bitter-free, including Carmen, County Fair, Diva, Green Knight, Sweet Slice, Sweet Success and Tasty Green. New cultivars arrive each year

I don't know much about the history, but I can tell you that it's a single word: Budlong
On the northwest side of Chicago there is a Budlong School, named after the family; and also Budlong Woods, which I believe is part of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County.
Maybe this will help you in your search!
Is there still a possibilty of buying, or getting, a jar of Budlong pickles. Are they still in business? Thanks for any help. Kenn Budlong
See Bundlong's Pickles
toward end of history.
A neighbor of mine told of a nearby landing field and a pickle farm. Mather Park now stands where one of them used to be.
My name is Wendy and I am a direct descendant of the Chicago Budlong farmers. I don't have all the facts in front of me right now but my father was Lyman A. Budlong and his father was Joseph Budlong (I believe his name was Joseph) and they were all in Evanston. Joseph Budlong and his father had a farm and they produced Budlong pickles. When I was a kid we visited, in 1961 or so, and you could still find a few old jars of the pickles but by then my grandfather had sold it all to Del Monte or something. Anyway, I don't have all the facts exactly but it was definitely my family and I'd love to get my hands on any Budlong pickle memorabilia if anyone has some they'd like to pass on.
Budlong Pickle Co. also had a pickle "factory" in Mauston, Wisconsin. They bought local cucumbers, sorted them by size and made them in wooden vats. There was a large deck area that went nearly to the top of the vats. The salt was brought in by rail and stored in a building on site. A wheelbarow was used to load salt to the vats when they made a brine. A large wooden cover went over the top while the cukes "worked". As a pre-teen, I used to sell my cucumbers across the street at the pickle factory. It's no longer there but there is still one building left although it doesn't look like it used to. Under the decking was a great place to play hide & seek as a kid. Then again, most places were.
According to a brief history of Ravenswood by Tim Wittman, Budlong Brothers Pickle Factory was located at Lincoln & Berwyn Avenues & opened in 1857

The family cat Fisher knows that water is the most amazing drink. He not only treasures his 2 bowls a day, but as the sun glints in the morning, he watches for the first foot out of the bed, and he zooms down stairs to be waiting in the kitchen sink for that first of the morning long, cool and refreshing drink of water from the faucet. Fisher the cat is a family water-drinking mascot, and like Fisher, the family joins in for a lipsmacking, body cleaning, crystal clear enjoyment of water. Fisher loves to lap up the liquids, and many leftovers have been there for him. But do you think he would ever lap up sodas and sugary soft drinks?
Of course, a cat may not be the ultimate source of good drinking habits, but he may be onto something. Did you know, "Drinking a bottle of soda is like opening your mouth and spooning in 17 teaspoons of sugar," said Santa Clara County Supervisor Ken Yeager. This also equals out to 250 empty calories. Nada, zilch. But the sodas don’t even innocuously sit there and amount to nothing in a child’s mouth and body. They do some mischief. 41% of children between ages 2 and 11 drink at least a soda a day 62% of teens drink at least a soda a day 13% of 12-to-17-year-olds drink three or more sodas on a daily basis according to a 2005 California Health Interview Survey. So what are the effects of soda sugary soft drinks on children? Here are the worst of the worst, that moms hear about all the time these days.
The Awful Truth (Tooth?) About SodaDrinking carbonated beverages such as soda can wreck some havoc on the teeth (and dental bills). They can erode tooth enamel, and the sugar also can lead to cavities, according to K.E. Heller and colleagues in a 2001 Journal of Dental Research study.
Children who drink more soda often drink less milk. Every soft drink consumed replaces milk and other calcium-fortified drinks that help growing kids build healthy bones. Milk consumption by children decreased by 36 percent between 1965 and 1996, replaced with soft drink and other sugary beverage consumption, reported Claude Cavadin and colleagues in an Archives of Diseases in Childhood study. During their early growth years children need the calcium to build strong bones. Soda contains Phosphoric Acid this interferes with the bodies’ ability to absorb bone building calcium. This means that milk the children do drink may not get used fully by their body. And that can lead to weaker then average bones and vulnerability to breaks and fractures.
Many sodas have Caffeine—even up to 50 mg of caffeine. That is equivalent to a half cup of regular coffee—which usually helps to stimulate our tired bodies –and then becomes a habit too!
Kids are getting fatter—it’s on the news so much it’s easy to skip it all, but obesity is a huge problem across the country. Even President Obama has made some comments about a soda tax in a recent magazine. In the article, he states that “There’s no doubt that our kids drink way too much soda. And every study that’s been done about obesity shows that there is as high a correlation between increased soda consumption and obesity as just about anything else”. Sodas and sugary soft drinks are partially to blame, according to a Lancet study. It found that for each sugary soft drink kids drank, their body mass index and odds of being overweight rose.
Kick the CanSo, best not to even get the kids accustomed to or hooked on sodas and sugary soft drinks. But if they are, how to break the habit?
Getting kids to cooperate is never easy. Getting them to “quit” something they already love may seem impossible. But it’s possible to get kids off soda and sugary drinks. It just takes perseverance, and some creative thinking! It just may not be overnight, or “cold turkey.”
Kids get very thirsty, often. When kids start jumping up and down yelling, “I’m parched” – they may be right! The truth is, that drinking enough fluid is so very necessary for kids Some medical reports advise that kids drink ½ their body weight in ounces, or even 1-2 quarts a day. A first reaction may be to quench that thirst with the soda, or sweet soft drink – to quiet down a potential tantrum. But think of dealing with the kids’ thirst like a road-trip – you can take the fast easy route of the highway, or you can turn off, and take a slower, more scenic drive. It may take a little longer, but you’ll still get where you are going, and may have gained something along the slower route.
So next time you need to put out the fire, slow down. Instead of quickly going for those sodas and sugary soft drinks that are really not doing the kids’ health a favor, in place of your own, or your child's soda, swap milk, 100 percent fruit juice or water, says a UCLA health research policy.
Try This InsteadSo first things first—if you’re going to swap something for the sodas or soft drinks, for kids the hands down first choice of any medical professional is water, calcium providing milk or soy milk. Or some 100 percent fruit juice. Note that, like mascot Fisher who leads by example first thing in the morning, the best choice for thirst is always water first.
Fisher the cat finds that making water the important choice also means not having it in the same old bowl all the time. If today's kids think water is too boring, use some creative serving ideas. Slice strawberries or oranges in a pitcher of water. Use fun shaped ice cube trays. Or, make ice cubes with purple 100 percent grape juice, or 100 percent blueberry juice to add to water served in clear glasses with silly straws. Have the kids choose funky cool water or milk glasses. If you have a set of glass glasses, (not expensive ones!) do a musical glass concert –the traditional science project--with different levels of water to find the perfect tone and the perfect level to fill the glass for drinking.
Maybe baby steps are needed to begin to modify a lifestyle habit. If kids or adults drink 2 sodas per day, replace 1 with an alternative. For a while, or always, the soda could be only for certain occasions. Model healthy choices whenever possible.
Kreative Koolers for KidsScience can sometimes be a winner. Kids can investigate the various healthy water possibilities for the home use such as: filtered water pitchers or systems, a water cooler (and kids can get their own).
Water can also be fizzy too. Seltzers come plain, or with slight natural flavorings (but be careful of some that do have added sugar.) Add a splash of 100 percent fruit juice to seltzer, and go for the colors they make.
Water can be flavored with natural fruit. Some moms have great success with putting fruit that is very ripe, almost overripe, (grapes, peaches, melons) into the bottom of a pitcher, add water, and let it sit overnight. The water gets the flavor from the fruit.
Many moms have reported kids loving herbal teas. The fruit teas, raspberry, blueberry apple have beautiful fragrance. For kids, good to the nose bodes well for tasting and enjoying. Indulge in a tiny amount of honey or stevia, or sugar that you control. Herbal teas can be served warm, cooled down, for a tea party. Or keep in a refrigerator pitcher for self-pouring. Many moms have reported the fun of making "sun" tea. Herbal tea bags are added to a glass container and left outside in the sun.
Fruit juices and fruit juice drinks can be very deceptive. Fruit itself is wonderful, and necessary for health, and 100 percent fruit juice also is an excellent source of necessary fruit vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. But if you don’t read the tiny ingredients listings on juices and juice drinks, you can miss how many of them are really mostly sugar, water, and a lot of unnatural things, so let the kids be investigative label reporters!
Refreshing RecipesMany health conscious moms have delightedly reported delicious results with some simple recipes for drinks.
Watermelon or cantaloupe agua fresca is nice, cool, refreshing, during the season for these fruits. Puree melon and a tiny bit of limejuice, add water, and then strain the whole thing.
Cucumber lemon water
Use 2-3 slices cucumber, 2-3 slices lemon. Some mint springs are optional. Add to 2 quarts of water. A stronger taste develops if you let the water sit in the fridge for about an hour. Some kids and moms prefer stronger taste—add more lemons or cukes, or change the balance of cukes to lemons adding more or less of one ingredient.
Apple and orange water
Use one orange sliced, sprinkle a bit of lemon juice on 2-3 slices of a green apple. Add these and juice of ½ lemon to a pitcher. Fill with water and ice. Let rest in the refrigerator for 24 hours.
So where ever you are from, when picking up a nice cold glass of water, creatively flavored or not –you can say, “Sláinte”, “Skaal”, “Salud”, “L’chaim”, “Na zdorovje”, or simply “Cheers” – to your kids’ health!

Calf
Once born, the cow is actually called a calf. Male calves, if left intact, are called bull calves, castrated male calves are called steer calves, and female calves are called heifer calves. The calf (in this case a heifer calf) will instinctively start feeding on its mothers milk nearly immediately after being born. They will be very wobbly of course, and are fun to watch sort of like someone who has way too much to drink. The mother's initial milk, called colostrum, is extremely important during the calves first 24 - 48 hours of life as it contains immunoglobins and antibodies critical to the calf's life, and other vitamins and minerals, protein and energy needed to give the calf a kick start. If a calf won't get milk on it's own, you need to find a way to get it to them to ensure their survival. After that critical period, production farms, especially dairy farms, will start feeding powdered milk along with grain, hay, and water until weaning at 3 months of age. At many other ranches and farms with beef cattle, as well as those few farms with naturally raised dairy cattle, nature is allowed to take its course in the cow-herd, and producers let the calf feed with its mother until the weaning period at around 6-10 months old.
Heifer
At the 6 to 10 month weaning period, the calf "magically" turns into a Heifer (female bovine that has not calved). By now, the heifer should be well adjusted to grazing on fresh green grass in the pasture, or, as is the case with most dairy heifers, in production facilities eating corn, grain, and hay in its pen or stall.
Puberty in the heifer comes when they reach around 8 to 9 months of age (some breeds are earlier or later than others), though they are not fully ready to be bred by the time they are 15 months old. Some heifers might have been born later in the year, or might have smaller size so they will not be able to be bred during their first go round. It is important that they get a good, healthy start in life, to allow for a maximum number of calves in their life for the benefit of the rancher's production. Heifers bred too small could end up with calving problems in the future, as well as problems raising a healthy calf when they are still in the growing stage. Though target age is around 396 days (15 months), her weight should be 60% or more of the herd's average mature weight in order to raise a good-sized calf and be large enough to carry the calf through to parturition safely. Age is important yes, but not so important as her weight relative to the rest of the main cowherd.
Cow
Heifers that are settled are most often called bred heifers, due to the fact that they have not officially had a calf yet, although there is nothing wrong with calling them a cow at this point. Cows have a similar gestation period (pregnancy time) as humans which is of course, 9 months or more accurately, an average of ~285 days. With this in mind, if you follow the gestation time table, the cow or bred heifer will give birth at when she is 24-27 months old.
To prepare for the cow to have a calf, she will start producing milk, or lactating. Nutrition needs start to gradually increase in her first trimester, and keep increasing, past when the calf is born, to peak 3 months after parturition (birth). First-calf heifers need to be watched for calving problems, much more so than mature cows do because their pelvic area isn't as "worn" as mature cows are, so dystocia or calving problems are more than likely to develop with heifers delivering their first calf. Once the calf is born, the cow will feed her baby until weaning time when the calf is 6 to 10 months of age. The cow is allowed rest for at least 45 to 60 days to get her estrous cycle back up to normal before she is bred again, continuing the cycle. Meanwhile, the calf is still at mother's side. It's important to note that first-calf heifers are still growing along with their new calf, as well as at this time they loose their baby teeth which adds stress to both the mother and the calf. First-calf heifers tend to raise smaller calves than the fully grown mature cows because of these added stressors, along with the expectations of providing enough milk to sustain and keep the calf growing and healthy.
The average cow will stay productive in a breeding herd for 7 to 12 years if no serious disease or physical problems develop. Some cows have been known to live longer than 12 years; a fair few have been able to be productive up into their early 20's. Depending on her breeding, British breed-type cows such as Angus, Red Angus, Hereford and Shorthorns mature at 1200 to 1600 lbs. Continental breed-type cows will mature slightly to much larger than British breeds do, sometimes up to 1800 lbs.
