Corten steel is advantageous over normal steel due to its ability to form a protective rust layer, which improves corrosion resistance and eliminates the need for painting or coating. This natural rust-like appearance also provides an aesthetic appeal and unique character to the steel structure. Additionally, Corten steel has higher tensile strength and is more durable in outdoor environments, making it a popular choice for architectural and construction applications.

Do not use dangerous HCl or hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid) and go with a mixture of sodium chloride (salt ) and distilled water. Spray a mist evenly over the previously sandblasted Corten for a numbers of days while letting the surface dry between coats until the desired surface is achieved. This can take days or weeks depending on your environment. i.e. the Sahara vs the Amazon. You will need to sandblast first. The key to excellent results is the prep: use fine sand or 80 mesh aluminum oxide for the sandblasting. Keep dry and immediately start the pickling or patination process to insure an evenly rusted protective surface that is aesthetically pleasing.

While metal planters are generally low-maintenance, occasional cleaning may be required to remove dirt or debris. Some metals, like corten steel, develop a protective patina over time, enhancing their weather resistance and unique appearance.

Technically steel or any other metal does not decompose. If you are referring to corrosion, it will eventually turn into Iron Oxide (rust) over time, but that is largely dependent on atmospheric conditions. The more humidity, the quicker. Less oxygen, slower. In the ocean with the salt water, VERY fast. The Titanic at the bottom of ocean cannot be raised due to this. The Titanic is no longer made of steel, but almost entirely of pure rust.

The company I work for built half inch thick horses formed from corten (a high quality grade of steel). These figures are expected to still be standing over Vantage, Washington (on I-90) 50,000 years from now.

On the other hand, a thin sheet of regular (non stainless) steel agitated in vinegar can entirely rust away within a couple of days.

COR-TEN can be welded both manually and mechanically, provided the general rules of welding practices are observed. A prerequisite for obtaining identical mechanical properties in the weld and in the base material is the application of suitable welding consumables and the choice of appropraite welding conditions. To consider are EN 10025-5 - Technical delivery conditions for structural steels with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance Recommendations for welding are also given in EN 1011 part 1 and part 2 - Welding, Recommendations for welding of metallic materials-. Lime basic electrodes, inert-gas welding wire, and wire/power combinations equivalent to the tensile strength of S355 are used as welding consumables For unprotected use care must be taken that the welded joint is also weather resistant. This is possible by using welding consumables matching the base material. If due to design or building specification stress relieving is required, it should be performed in the range temperature from about 530°C to 580°C.

Straight from the wikipedia:

Work began on the project in 1994 and cost £1 million. Most of the project funding was provided by the National Lottery.

Due to its exposed location, the sculpture was built to withstand winds of over 100 mph (160 km/h). Thus, 600 tonnes of concrete were used to create foundations which anchor the sculpture to rock 70ft (20m) below.

The sculpture was built at Hartlepool Steel Fabrications Ltd. using Corten weather resistant steel. It was made in three parts-with the body weighing 100 tonnes and two wings weighing 50 tonnes each-then brought to its site by road. It took seven hours for the body to be transported from its construction site in Hartlepool, up the A19 road to the site.

Construction work on the Angel was finished on 16 February 1998. It aroused some controversy in British newspapers, at first, while local councillor, Martin Callanan, was especially strong in his opposition. It is now considered by some as a landmark for the Northeast of England[4][5] and has been listed by one organisation as an "Icon of England".[6]

The sculpture was decorated in 1998 by fans of the Newcastle United football team who paid tribute to local hero Alan Shearer by putting a £1,000 team shirt over the Angel, complete with Shearer's name and famous number 9. The shirt stayed up for 20 minutes until the police removed it.

The sculpture is known locally as the "Gateshead Flasher", because of its location and appearance.[7]

Steel does not decompose in the same way that organic materials do. Steel can corrode over time when exposed to certain environmental conditions, but the process can take a very long time depending on the specific circumstances. Properly maintained steel structures can last for decades or even centuries without significant decomposition.

Steel is durable, strong, and has a high tensile strength, making it ideal for construction and manufacturing. It is also recyclable, cost-effective, and versatile in its applications, ranging from buildings to vehicles to appliances. Additionally, steel is resistant to corrosion and fire, providing long-lasting performance.

The strength of steel is graded based on it's yield strength- the point that it will have a permenant deformation from a load.

Steel will be graded however an engineer requires it to be in order to meet the design criteria. In order to keeps things simple and economical, common grades are: Mild which is essentially untreated for any design strength; A36 (with a 36,000 psi yield strength); and A51 (with a 51,000 psi yield strength).

Most buildings are designed with A36 in mind and it is by far the most common. Cars, industrial equiment, and special construction may use A51 or higher. Since steel becomes more expensive the more it is treated, any product or assembly requiring anything other than standard yield strength will require an analysis showing the cost savings of using less higher-strength steel versus more lower-strenght steel.

Steel comes in other varieties, like stainless (with its own grading characteristics) or corten (meant to be exposed to the weather).
