Cirrhotic hepatitis is more commonly known as cirrhosis of the liver. This occurs usually in alcoholics, and leads to loss of liver production.

1 answer

It means that 60% of your liver is currently functioning normally, but the other 40% has stopped functioning and is cirrhotic. (Not that your liver is distinctly split 60:40, with one side working but the other not - cirrhotic cells will be interspersed with normal cells). Your liver can regenerate itself with just 5% left working, however cirrhotic cells will remain (i.e the cannot be reabsorbed by the body). If this does happen, it may mean having part of the cirrhotic liver surgically removed.

Alternative treatments that may be of help to cirrhotic patients include nutritional and juice therapy, Western herbal therapy, traditional Chinese medicine, and homeopathy.

Cirrhosis is the last stage of liver failure; the liver is primarily scar tissue by the cirrhotic stage. This is not curable, as once the liver is scar tissue, it stays scar tissue.

It is true that the liver "regenerates itself", but only to a certain extent. If there are not enough healthy cells to regenerate (which there aren't by the cirrhotic stage), or the speed of regeneration does not exceed the speed of degeneration, then liver function will become worse and worse. This is why cirrhosis is not curable/reversible. (The treatment "cure" is a liver transplant, which is essentially the same as saying that "the cure for baldness is hair" - it doesn't really fix the underlying problem, but it does provide a solution).

From what someone told me who was on the band that I know personally, he was not only an alcoholic but also a drug addict. He used to get his drugs from Stan Mark. This is why Stan Mark lasted for so many years even with his unprofessionalism. Maynard used to drink a bottle of champaigne before he went out on stage and died from a pre-cirrhotic liver disease.

chronic alcoholism can result in a cirrhotic liver/failed liver. with this comes liver dysfxn, and the liver is not able to perform its usual fxn of converting ammonia to urea in the urea cycle as well => hyperammonemia. neural dysfxn is a consequence of this accumulation of ammonia, and the the cz of what is known as "asterixis" aka the "flapping tremor."

As far as i know, every kind of alcohol effects the liver.

In short, there are numerous liver diseases related to alcohol consumption:

Accumulation of fluid in the abdomen; bleeding from veins in the esophagus; enlarged spleen; high blood pressure in the liver; changes in mental function, and/or coma; kidney failure; liver cancer; psoriasis; alcohol hepatitis; and Alcoholic cirrhosis

Alcohol is a neurotoxin that both creates changes in the nervous system and causes it to function less efficiently.

With respect to cirrhosis, a properly-functioning liver is required for maintaining proper body chemistry. A cirrhotic liver produces (or allows to remain) a wide variety of acids, metallic ions and other toxins that interfere with the ability of the nervous system to function.

A nodular liver typically refers to the presence of multiple small nodules on the liver surface, which can be a sign of advanced liver disease like cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is a late stage of scarring of the liver caused by many forms of liver diseases and conditions, leading to loss of normal liver function. It can be caused by alcohol abuse, chronic viral hepatitis, or other conditions.

Alcohol is essentially poison. Although when used in moderation it is relatively harmless, ingested in large quantities is has many harmful effects. Intoxication results from the brain becoming dehydrated. Physical damage can result to all the major organs. Long term abuse of alcohol can result in dementia from the brain atrophying. Also it can raise blood pressure causing heart attack and stroke. The liver can become cirrhotic and cease to function, the kidneys can fail. It can cause or make worse diabetes. Etc...

Alcohol-related liver damage can be divided into three categories:

Fatty liver. Some degree of fat deposition in the liver occurs in almost all heavy drinkers.

Alcoholic hepatitis. This disorder is characterized by widespread inflammation and destruction (i.e., necrosis) of liver tissue. Scar tissue may begin to replace healthy liver tissue, a process called fibrosis. Symptoms of alcoholic hepatitis may include fever, jaundice,2 and abdominal pain.

Alcoholic cirrhosis A cirrhotic liver is characterized by extensive fibrosis that stiffens blood vessels and distorts the internal structure of the liver. This structural damage results in severe functional impairment, which may lead secondarily to malfunction of other organs, such as the brain and kidneys.

Drinking too much alcohol can lead to three types of liver conditions - fatty liver, hepatitis, and cirrhosis. You are unlikely to develop these problems if you drink within the recommended safe limits. For all types of liver disease caused by alcohol, the main treatment is to stop drinking completely.

Liver cancer, like any cancer, is a proliferation of malignant cells which can migrate to other parts of the body, causing further cancerous tumors. (i.e new cancerous cells are developing in the liver and progressively hindering liver function).

Whereas liver cirrhosis is a progressive scarring of the existing liver tissue, to the extent that liver function is severely compromised.

Yes it does. There are a few reasons for this.

Firstly, alcohol is a diuretic, which depletes your body of fluids and electrolytes. In response, your body will store all the water you consume- water itself, the water in whatever food you eat, etc. To top it off, many people eat unhealthy food while drinking. These foods are typically high in sodium, causing further water retention (edema). The solution to this problem can be attained either in a few days or in as little as 15-20 minutes.

For a ~few day cure:

drink lots of water, this will flush out excess sodium and balance your cellular water content. along with this, drink green tea, which is a mild, healthy, diuretic, and things like cranberry juice, fruits and vegetables.

for a short, 15-20 min cure:

sweat it out! aerobic activity will promote sweating, getting rid of both excess fluid and excess salts with it. you can also sit in a sauna for this period of time and this should do the trick.

There are long time reasons why facial swelling can be caused by alcohol, and this is more serious.

The liver releases enzymes involved in water balance between cells and the interstitial tissue. Hardcore alcoholics have weak livers, and all of its functions will be decreased, and the facial swelling will remain so long as the liver is damaged. The good news is that if one stops drinking before permanent cirrhotic damage, the liver is remarkably able to regenerate itself. Laying off booze, taking in a healthy diet, getting antioxidants, and perhaps getting a bottle of milk thistle. One should return to normal within 2 weeks - a month or more, depending on the extent of alcohol consumption.

Parotid swelling in alcoholic liver disease occurs due to a condition known as sialadenosis, which is characterized by non-inflammatory enlargement of the salivary glands. This enlargement is thought to be caused by metabolic disturbances associated with alcohol abuse, leading to changes in the secretion and composition of saliva. Additionally, liver dysfunction in alcoholic liver disease can impair the metabolism of certain substances, potentially contributing to the development of parotid swelling.

The liver is like the body's manufacturing center and it takes the blood nutrients and a host of other substances and uses what it can and sends the rest of the stuff through the spleen. When your body needs an enzyme or other kind of component the liver makes and ships it out. Certain conditions such as infections like Hepatitis cause the liver to become inflamed and to work extra hard. Doctors look at the liver enzymes as a way to see how hard the liver is working and its a good marker for over work it these are high. All this combined is to say that the liver contains a lot of thin walled areas called sinuses that contain the stuff manufactured along with blood and proteiins. These things are mixed and forwarded on through the bodies circulatory system. The spleen weeds out certain types of bacteria and old blood cells, etc. If the liver is over worked the enzymes increase to a point that it cannot work any harder and things start to break down. The cells die. The little passages scar down and then well it eventually stops working. The thing that is most remarkable is that it takes quite a bit of a beating. First it swells and slows down, then it scars down even more to the point that this little shriveled up, calloused organ that used to filter and manufacture the contents of the blood and bodies fluids no longer works. The condition where the liver is enlarged is called hepatomegaly, and the condition where it shrivels up is called cirrhosis. Most cirrhotic people will have little livers and at times big bellies because the fluids are not being filtered and leak out or might even cause a back pressure in such places as the hemorrhoids or across the abdomen. Most of the time we see cirrhosis happen in people who have either ingested toxic substances, or toxic quantities of substances such as alcohol or even Tylenol, otherwise called acetominophen. I've been taught that about ten of the extra strength Tylenol will pickle your liver, i.e., cause liver failure. So there are lots of combinations of things that will shut down the liver, and they can be categorized into chemicals and diseases for short. In addition to the above there is another condition known as congestive heart failure in which a fluid backs up because the heart is weakened. This combination of things will often give a sign like swollen ankles, but beware. All swollen ankles are not an indication of heart failure, but it is a reason to look a little closer at the situation. You could continue on and on and talk about how cancerous growth impede the liver's function or other rare conditions in metabolism that cause problems. Even parasites can do it. So I hope that helps.

Alcohol in the form of whiskey or brandy markedly increases the absorption of ferric chloride in normal subjects, but had no effect upon the absorption of ferrous ascorbate or haemoglobin iron. Some evidence was obtained to suggest that this action was due to the stimulation of hydrochloric acid production in the stomach. These findings may have some relevance to the well established association between excessive consumption of alcohol and the development of iron overload. Hydrochloric acid was found to enhance markedly the absorption of ferric iron and to cause a modest increase in the absorption of ferrous iron. In contrast, haemoglobin iron absorption is not increased by acid. Although the reasons for these differences were not established, it seems likely that hydrochloric acid acts by maintaining ferric iron in solution until it reaches the absorbing area of the duodenum. It is known that ferrous ions remain in solution at a much higher pH than do ferric ions. The fact that the absorption of haemoglobin iron is not increased by acid adds further weight to evidence obtained by other workers which suggests that this organic iron complex is absorbed in a manner different from simple iron salts

It has been pointed out that many wines from different parts of the world contain significant amounts of iron, and it has been suggested that the high incidence of iron overload in alcoholic subjects is a result of the excessive iron intake. It should, however, be noted that wines contain 10-20 % alcohol, and the absorption of iron taken in this way may thus be enhanced.

These considerations do not exclude the possibility that other factors may contribute to the association between iron overload and the excessive consumption of alcohol. Pancreatitis is common in alcoholics, and there is now good evidence that deficiency of the exocrine secretions of the pancreas is associated with excessive absorption of iron. This has been shown in animals after pancreatectomy, ligation of the pancreatic duct, and ethionine-induced pancreatic damage, and in patients with chronic pancreatitis.

The fact that cirrhosis is common in alcoholics may also be of relevance, since it has been shown that some cirrhotic subjects absorb excessive amounts of iron even when the body stores are normal or increased . It is, however, still not clear whether these effects are secondary to the cirrhosis itself or to associated pancreatic damage.

Lastly, alcoholics as a group eat suboptimal diets, and there are several experimental studies showing increased absorption of iron when the diet is low in certain nutrients but high in iron. These diets have included low phosphate, low protein, high fat, and cholinedeficient regimes.

Ref 1-5: R. W. CHARLTON, P. JACOBS, H. SEFTEL .Effect of Alcohol on Iron Absorption. Brit. med. J., 1964, 2, 1427-1429

· The consumption of excessive amounts of alcohol affects human iron homeostasis and an association of iron overload and heavy alcohol consumption has been recognized for many years. Both major proteins of iron metabolism, ferritin and transferrin, are affected by alcohol. Increased hepatic iron levels are seen in a high proportion of alcoholic subjects, sometimes causing confusion in diagnosis between alcoholic liver disease and iron-overload disease. The pattern of deposition of this iron in alcoholics, however, differs from that seen in the iron-overload disease haemochromatosis. Excessive alcohol consumption causes transferrin to become carbohydrate deficient, which allows it to be used as an efficient biochemical marker of alcohol abuse. It is concluded that. Moderate alcohol consumption is unlikely to pose a problem with iron absorption, but excessive amounts of alcohol is associated with iron overload, particularly in adult males.

· Since nonheme iron absorption efficiency decreases with increasing dosage, iron toxicity from consumption of food sources is rare. However, consumption of large amounts of alcohol increases mucosal iron uptake, particularly among individuals with hemochromatosis or who are carriers of this recessive trait which is characterized by failure to regulate iron absorption. Symptoms of this genetic disorder include chronic fatigue, weight loss, arthritis, mouth pain, heart palpitations and depression.
