In both texts the main focus is on two individuals who face different hardships. In both texts the main character has a best friend ( who eventually dies), the difference however is noted in the time period in which each best friend affects the main character. For billy in A Kestrel For A Knave his best friend is a kestrel (Kes) even though his friend is a bird the impact it has on the character is to be noted. Due to the amount of care the bird requires billy no longer has time nor motive to participate in disruptive behaviour. The change for billy occurs while his best friend is alive. on the other hand in Beka Lamb the main character Beka begins to change as a result of her friends death. after the death of toycie it can be seen where beka becomes more focused and determined she conquers her habit of lying and she improve academically.

The main character in both texts have a problem when it comes to society accepting the. Bekas problem arises when she is unaware of her true identity, at school she is taught one way and at home she is expected to act another. Beka coming from a middle class family is looked down upon by the upper class and scorned because of her life style by the lover class. she is unaware of where she belongs in society. Billy is from the lower class, he resides on the "Estate" (irony) billy is ostracised by society because of where he is. Billy trough out the text struggles for acceptance. his life is made difficult by the friends he used to keep, his bad relationship with his brother and his mother (there is strong suggestion that she is a prostitute). these factors cause society to look down on Billy.

family also varies in the two books. in Beka Lamb, beka's familly is very supportive and close problems are resolved through the help of all the members. in contrast Billys family is estranged and there is great tension bettween billy and his older brother Jud. Billy's mother is portrayed as selfish and unreliable.

Untuk mengelakkan semangat perpaduan daripada terkubur begitu sahaja , institusi keluarga memainkan peranan vital untuk menyuntik semangat perpaduan yang luhur dalam sanubari generasi muda yang merupakan bakal pelapis kepimpinan tanah air.Setelah meneliti dan mengkaji sehingga ke akar umbi , teladan ibu bapa atau lebih dikenali sebagai "role model" merupakan uslub primer yang efektif dan pragmatik untuk menyemai semangat solidariti dalam kalangan anak-anak. Dalam konteks ini , ibu bapa wajar menunjukkan suri teladan yang baik dengan menjalinkan perhubungan yang yang erat dan karib dengan jiran tetangga. Sempena sambutan perayaan , ibu bapa haruslah mengadakan majlis rumah terbuka . Secara tidak langsung , amalan ini dapat membentuk ikatan silaturahim dan memperkukuh semangat kejiranan dalam kalangan jiran tetangga setempat. Justeru, perpaduan akan bertambah utuh dan teguh .Di samping itu , memang tidak dinafikan bahawa ibu bapa turut berperanan penting dalam mengajar anak-anak mereka menghayati prinsip-prinsip Rukun Negara serta menghormati adat istiadat kaum-kaum lain dengan penuh berdedikasi. Pada realitinya , ibu bapa haruslah memastikan generasi muda berpegang teguh kepada prinsip-prinsip Rukun Negara untuk melahirkan masyarakat yang bersatu-padu dan harmoni dalam pelbagai aspek. Bertitik tolak daripada itu , ibu bapa turut bertanggungjawab memastikan anak-anak mereka memahami dan menghormati adat istiadat , pantang larang serta kebudayaan pelbagai kaum di Malaysia demi mengelakkan konflik antara kaum .Selain itu , semangat mahmudah yang jitu ini turut mampu diterap dalam jiwa generasi muda melalui dorongan yang diberi oleh anak-anak mereka untuk menyertai aktiviti-aktiviti yang dapat mengukuhkan perpaduan antara kaum di sekolah seperti PLKN , RIMUP dan sebagainya. Maka , program-program khas yang diwujudkan untuk remaja ini amatlah efektif dalam menjana peluang untuk mewujudkan interaksi antara generasi muda. Strategi serampang dua mata ini bukan sahaja dapat menyemai semangat perpaduan dalam kalangan remaja malahan mampu menyemarakkan semangat patriotisme mereka , bak kata pepatah "sambil menyelam minum air".Bukan itu sahaja , langkah bercerita tentang susur galur sejarah bangsa Malaysia kepada anak-anak juga merupakan satu minhaj yang ideal diambil oleh ibu bapa. Ibu bapa perlu menekankan bahawa kemerdekaan tanah air kita yang dicapai hari ini adalah berkat perjuangan semua kaum dan semua anak watan wajib menghargai titik peluh bekas pemimpin kita yang tidak ternilai ini. Sebagai analoginya , generasi muda yang umur baru setahun jagung , darah baru setampuk pinang tidak akan terlalu taksud dengan kenikmatan materialistik sehingga hidup dalam kepompong sendiri dan mengambil enteng tentang kepentingan mewujudkan perpaduan dalam tanah air sendiri .Seterusnya, ibu bapa juga perlulah menggalakkan anak-anak mereka menonton filem , drama dan iklan yang bertemakan perpaduan antara kaum. Statistik yang sahih telah menunjukkan filem-filem ini memang jauh lebih efektif dan berkesan berbanding dengan bahan bertulis kerana persembahan media elektronik lebih menarik , kreatif dan inovatif. Maka , pelbagai iktibar dan pengajaran dapat diperoleh oleh generasi muda melalui persembahan-persembahan elektronik ini . Rentetan itu, wujudlah garis panduan yang berladaskan segala iktibar dan pengajaran yang diperolehi oleh generasi muda untuk mengecapi perpaduan dan keharmonian .Seperti yang terkandung dalam pepatah Melayu "bersatu kita teguh, bercerai kita roboh", semangat perpaduan yang menjadi panduan hidup anak watan merupakan inti kepada pembentukan masyarakat sakinat dan harmoni. Untuk merealisasikan matlamat ini , iaitu membentuk masyarakat sakinat dan mengecapi perpaduan antara kaum , segenap lapisan masyarakat sayugialah bersinergi bagai aur dengan tebing dan jangan sekali-kali bernafsi-nafsi bagai enau dalam belukar ,melepaskan pucuk masing-masing . sebagai intihanya , iltizam dan komitmen
