The Tea Party movement was a grass roots response to the increased government spending, especially in areas that have traditionally not been benefactors of government dollars. The bank bailouts, TARP, GM restructuring outside of bankruptcy, and other government intervention in the economy was the catalyst from which the Tea Party was born.

Protesting the bank bailouts is what started the Tea Party Movement.

It is a matter of opinion. There are well known investors like Jim Rogers who believe the bailouts are counter to the guiding principles of our capitalistic system, and that the proper course is bankruptcy for all companies unable to meet their debt. Others contend, as President Bush has maintained, that bailouts are a necessary evil- used only in the most grave situations. The concept is that as one huge company like GM goes bankrupt, it causes a chain reaction leading many other companies to collapse. Unemployment increases and consumer spending drops, leading to more failures. Due to the controversial nature of this question, I believe that anyone wishes to express an opinion, do so, but do not delete others comments.

America has 50 stars on the flag and as of January of 2009, Barrack Obama is the President.
There are a lot of famous people in America and there is 3.9 million square miles of American soil.
America has a rough population of 300 million people.
The United States is not one of the richest countries of the world. As of now, even our children's children will be paying for the bailouts that the American people opposed and had no say so. Even if majority was against the bailouts, government still gave the bailouts, but only to certain companies.
The U.S. has the highest unemployment rate that we have seen in a long time. Printing money without something to back it, will only increase the time frame of the recession.
George Washington was he First President of the USA.. Ever

Considering you didn't say how many facts, this seems sufficient. Here are a few more examples. George Washington was the 1st president. Abraham Lincoln may be the most influential president

Greece has a horrible situation with unemployment. The level of unemployment is roughly 25% and the rate of underemployment (where people work fewer hours or at a lower paying job than they should be working) is nearly as high. Successive bailouts and austerity measures have done nothing to improve the situation in Greece.

The stock market and the whole economy crumpled when the economic crisis started. The bailout funds and fed purchases have helped the banks generate funds to help them keep running their business. As a result, the investor sentiment has improved and the market economy has stabilized too.

Critics of Federal bailouts of companies in danger of going out of business come from all walks of life and from various political viewpoints. Here are some examples of critics as mentioned in the question:

A. Strong proponents of free market economics do not believe that the government should ever become involved with this type of bail out practice. For them it is detrimental to the economy and to the principles of free enterprise;

B. Critics on the left see "bail outs" as a way for government to help big business which for the most part people on the far left are not one of their favorite institutions; and

C. Ordinary citizens with no particular political motives, do not understand or want their tax dollars to be used in helping out companies that are in financial straits.

They should no longer be available. Thast is the sub-prime market and they are what triggered this present economic crisis. Hand a person tens of thousands of dollars and don't confirm they can repay the loan with interest? Many of the companies that gave them out have gone out of existence others are enjoying taxpayer bailouts.

It means that if you don't speak up against something then it's okay with you- like watching someone get bullied, or your government going to war, or fat cats getting bailouts of their failing banks due to their greed and using the money for their own bonuses.

The easiest example is the automaker bailouts.

Chrysler and GM both had credit companies (Chrysler Credit and GMAC) that were heavily into toxic mortgage financing. When the mortgage downturn threatened to eat GM and Chrysler, the government stepped in and provided temporary financing as part of a restructuring.

If they would not have done this, GM and Chrysler would have gone out of business and put thousands of people out of work.

PLUS most of the companies that supply those two companies would have gone out of business.

AND all the dealers who sell GM or Chrysler products would have gone out of business.

I, and a lot of professional economists, believe that if GM and Chrysler would have collapsed the United States would have entered a depression that would have been impossible to get out of.

1 answer

Yes, inadvertently taxpayers did pay for wall streets failure during the recession. The greatest amount of taxes went to government bailouts for failing giants such as GM. On a smaller scale, many people were forced to apply for unemployment, food stamps and Medicaid benefits because they were out of work.

Bailouts. Block and catgorical grants given by the Federal government to state governments to combat some type of issue. An example of this was federal money given to states for the purpose of building new roads in the 1980's, with the concession that the minimum drinking age would be established at 18.

The US government does little to help indebted individuals beyond the offer of bankruptcy; bailouts are generally reserved for large corporations. However, some options exist, such as student loan forgiveness. More information can be found on the eHow article "Types of public debt relief and debt forgiveness," and other such articles on eHow.

Boss Tweed, like a lot of Democrats in that era, was a pioneer in crony capitalism; using government to control business. But Tweed also used government to control outcome in politics, which is why he's so infamous.

I'm not sure what he'd think of the Health Care bill, but he would support bailouts and intimidation by Black Panthers, etc.

There are several factors that played a role in the rapid economic changes that have wracked countries in recent years. One factor is the need for the bank bailouts by the national governments. Another factor was the housing market practices allowing people to purchase houses at sub-prime rates with questionable trading practices. This lead to the collapse in the housing market.

So all who pay taxes technically pay or fund the US Military, just as you would fund schools, road repairs or construction, parks and wildlife, bailouts, health care reforms, welfare, Medicare/Medicaid and many others. All soldiers pay taxes so they themselves are paying for themselves.
