The wild duck was shot by Werle, though not fatally, and it fell into the depths of the lake and became entangled in seaweed or whatever aquatic fauna, but was rescued by Werle's dog. The duck spent the rest of its days the Ekdal attic.

Old Ekdal could be the wild duck, since he was "shot" by Werle and suffered much humiliation because of him, and Hjalmar could be the dog since his dominant objective in the play is to rescue his father and restore honor to the Ekdal name. Also, the attic or garret symbolizes illusions, evidenced by Old Ekdal's frequent trips up there to "hunt" as he did in older days.

Hjalmar himself could be the wild duck since he too suffered at Werle's hands, though he did not know it until Gregers, acting as the dog, rescued him from his life's lies, or the seaweed, or the marsh gases, depending on your translation. Hjalmar also frequented the attic.

Hedvig is another candidate for the wild duck, since she says she identifies with the duck and feels that she is one herself. Werle also injured her in a way, and she was trapped in the lies in the "boundless deep," only to be "rescued" by Gregers the ever-helpful dog. She too a considerable amount of time in the attic.

Even Gina could be seen as the wild duck, since Werle injured her too, and Gregers rescued her from the lie she wanted, even needed to keep living. Interestingly, the attic symbolized a sort of illusion or fantasy, and the practical Gina never went there to aimlessly shoot or read as her family did.
