People who live in Tennessee or who come from Tennessee are called Tennesseans.
Tennesseans have also been known as "Volunteers", "Big Benders", or even "Butternuts." The first two names are obvious references to two of the state's popular nicknames. The third, "Butternuts," probably originated during the War between the States and is reference to the tan colored uniforms of Tennessee soldiers.

Tennessee seceded from the Union in 1861 primarily due to its strong affiliation with the Southern economy, culture, and institution of slavery. Many Tennesseans believed in and were committed to the idea of states' rights, which they felt were being threatened by the federal government. The decision to secede was also influenced by the election of President Abraham Lincoln, whose anti-slavery stance was perceived as a threat to the Southern way of life.

The University of Tennessee adopted the nickname "Volunteers" due to the overwhelming number of young men who have volunteered for duty in our nations wars. Starting with the Texas Revolution and the Alamo whereTtennesean soldiers were led by Sam Bowie and Davy Crocket to theSpanish- American war all the way to Vietnam, more Tennesseans have volunteered to fight for freedom than any other state in the Union.Tennessee is known as the "Volunteer State," a nickname earned during the War of 1812 because of the prominent role played by volunteer soldiers from Tennessee, especially during the Battle of New Orleans.

"America" is a region referring to the two continents, and the "United States" or "United States of America" is a country. America, when used appropriately, refers to the western hemisphere consisting of North America, Central America, and South America.
"America" is often inappropriately used interchangeably with "United States." While many in the United States of America and other countries generally refer to the country as Americaand US residents/citizens as Americans, it is a misappropriation of the term in this context.
America is not solely the United States. Yes, citizens, such as Californians and Tennesseans, of the United States of America are Americans; however, so are Canadians, Mexicans, and Brazilians, and the like. Furthermore, many people elsewhere in the Americas resent the misappropriation of the term in this context and, thus, this usage is frequently avoided.

The most important fact about Tennessee, the Volunteer State, is that it is the 16th state to be admitted to the United States of America.
Three US Presidents came from Tennessee.
It is called the Volunteer State because of the thousands of Tennesseans who enlisted in the Army to come to the aid of their country during The War of 1812. These brave men played a very prominent role in that little skirmish, especially at the Battle of New Orleans. There's a song by that title: 'The Battle of New Orleans'. On each Fourth of July, you might hear a song called 'The War of 1812 Overture'. THAT'S another one of my favorites.

Apparently the republican-controlled house in Tennessee continues to choose to be out of touch with the reality of the hard times in the state. They are arguing over the need to increase the tax to business' to maintain the funding. You need to contact your local Tennessee representative and let them know the urgency of the situation. They are passing the dumbest laws and making that a priority over the Tennessee worker who has became unemployed through no fault of their own, and cannot find work! One republican has even said he wants to wait around and see what other states do. It's very discerning to know most Tennessee officials want to model themselves after how another state would act with this disaster. Espcecially when the democrats have made compromises and proposed a plan already passed in the Tennesse senate. Gov. Bredesen has commented that the cost of approving this plan is far less then allowing them to do nothing and the Feds step in. You can read more about this at thetennesean.com or by just doing a search with Tennessee Unemployment Benefits Extension. After you sort through their easy passage of the previous extension (the 2nd) provided under President Bush you can see how they are playing politics when thousands of Tennesseans are hurting.
TAKE ACTION NOW. The information below applies to whatever state you may reside which is not taking action.
I have found this site which will help a person locate their state representative and send a message urging them to pass legislation for the EB. Go to www.unemployedworkers.org and select "Act Now for Unemployment Benefits in your State" and you will be taken to an easy-to-use message to send to your congressmen. Make it as personal as you can so they know it's not a computer drone sending a message. Also, any ideas on how we get this link above to more jobless Tennesseans? I imagine there are a percentage who cannot even afford computers or navigate email. The link above is very easy-to-use and automated. Please pass this along to as many Tennesseans or persons in other states affected you know who want to ask their congressmen/women to help. Communication is our only hope. They need to appreciate the need to make this a top priority. I do not represent unemployedworkers.org but I believe this is a good cause with unemployment at the staggering level that it is.

The earliest known variation of the name was the NativeAmerican village "Tanasqui", recorded by Spanish explorer Juan Pardo in 1567 when he and his party were traveling inland from South Carolina.
However, British traders came across a Cherokee town named "Tanasi" in the early 18thcentury, and it appears as such on maps as early as 1725.

When Mexico lost the Mexican-American War, the US simply adapted the name to english, hence New Mexico.

By the way, the U.S. occupation of Mexico City in the Mexican War is where those Halls of Montezuma in the Marine Hymn come from. And that's the war in which so many Tennesseans volunteered that it adopted the nickname "the Volunteer State." And the last Aztec emperor's name was really Moctezuma II, not Montezuma.

Fort Pillow is a river fort located on the Mississippi River and was the first fort north of Memphis. It was not as important as Fort Donnelson and Island No. 10. The Confederates expanded the fort until it contained about 10,000 troops. It had several large calber guns located at the water level to shell any enemy ships coming down the Mississippi River. Up on a high 70-foot bluff were field artillery used to defend the fort from attack by land. It was used as a training base and a port for the river fleet. During the Battle of Island No. 10, some of the Confederate ships stopped at Fort Pillow for replenshiment. After the fall of the river forts and the battle of Memphis, the Confederates evacuated the fort and it was occupied by the Union. One report said that the USS Cairo was repaired there to strengthen its armor(this was the ironclad that is on display at Vicksburg National Battlefield Park). Over the years, the size of Fort Pillow diminished. By 1864, it was an outpost for about 500 to 1000 troops. Among the Union troops were many Tennesseans who had been enlisted from the area, including blacks from Tennessee and Mississippi. One of them was the notorious Colonel Hawkins of the 7th Tennesse Cavalry(USA). He was raiding the local farmers who supported the South and some accused him of murder and destroying private property. A local farmer wrote General Nathan Forrest with a request for help in removing these Union raiders. Forrest moved his force of 2 cavalry divisions up from Mississippi to Jackson, Tenn. He sent one brigade north to Dyersberg Tenn to attack and capture Col. Hawkins. He sent another force towards Mempis as a diversion. He sent his main force of 1500 men and 1 artillery battery to Fort Pillow. Forrest's men travelled all day and night in the rain and arrived at Fort Pillow on the morning of 12 April 1864. They easily drove in the pickets and the 530 Union soldiers took refuge in a small inner breastworks. The Confederates positioned their troops on all sides of the fort and below the bluff. They placed snipers on higher ground and were able to fire into the breastworks. Forrest called a truce and demanded surrender but the Union refused. The Union commander had been killed and the inexperienced acting commander kept up the impression that the commander was in charge. At 2:30pm, Forrest's troops charged the breastworks and some Union surrendered but others rushed down the bluff in hopes of being rescued by a Union river boat. Fighting continued as no sign of surrender was given by the officers. Many of the black soldiers knew that surrender was not an option so they continued to fight. This enraged the Confederate soldiers who took out their anger on the blacks and even the whites who armed them. This battle was called a "massacre" due to the high death toll. Of the 530 Union soldiers, almost half were killed. Most of the blacks were killed. The official Confederate records report casualties of 14 Killed and either 60 or 80 wounded. However, I received a list of 85 casualties from the Park Ranger of Fort Pillow State Historical Park. After researching these names and other names found in other sources, I have compiled a list of 20 Killed and 79 Wounded. General Forrest's troops quickly rounded up the prisoners and began burying the dead. Under truce with the river boat, they negotiated transfer of the wounded. The Confederates returned to Jackson, Tenn, where they remained for awhile. They soon returned to Mississiippi. Soon afterwards, General Forrest would defeat another Union cavlary force at Brices's Crossroads, where some of the black Union soldiers wore buttons that read "Remember Fort Pillow". The word of the massacre reached the Northern press. The US Congress called for an investigation and many survivors were called to testify. The investigation committee prepared House Report No. 65 on the massacre with the testimony and published several thousand copies. This all happened before General Forrest's account reached his supreme commander, General Polk, and his President. Gen. Forrest's account was sent to Gen. Polk but he was killed at Atlanta. Forrest's report was later found in his papers. The official records and many sources report the casualties as being 14 killed and either 60 or 80 wounded. Early reports from the Confederates placed the Union forces at the fort to be between 700-800. This was erroneous information based upon confusion of the fort's records. By 1864, the Union had only 550 troops at the fort when General Forrest attacked it with 1500 Confederates. However, based upon the size of the fort and the uneven terrain, it would be difficult for all 1500 men to participate in the attack. The 1 artillery battery that went with Forrest did not take part in the battle as it was delayed by the rain and the high bluffs. UNION: Of 700 men who were sent from Memphis, only 246 arrived. 111 were disabled due to sickness and 48 were detach. The strenght was 536 combat ready soldiers consisting of the 13th Tennessee Cavalry Battalion(US) and black soldiers of the 6 US Colored Heavy Artillery. WHO QUALIFIES FOR A CLASS D LICENSE? To qualify for a Class D license, you must be at least sixteen (16) years of age, and must pass a vision test, knowledge test, and driving test. (NOTE: if you are under 18 and have graduated from high school you would qualify for the regular Class D license). You must also provide proof of U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residency in order to qualify for a Class D license. Otherwise you would only qualify for a TD Certificate for Driving. All the other requirements for a TD Certificate for Driving are the same as those for a Class D license. If you are under age 18, you will be issued a Class D Intermediate Restricted license (or TD Intermediate Restricted Certificate for Driving) and you must also: * Have a Minor/Teenage Affidavit signed by a responsible adult * Provide proof that you are actively enrolled in school or are a high school graduate, and * Have prior driving experience through either (a) having a learner permit in Tennessee for 180 days with less than 6 points on your driving record, (b) having a learner permit in another state for 180 days AND providing a copy of a clear driving record from that state showing no traffic, or (c) being licensed to drive in another state for at least three months with a license level equivalent to a graduated, intermediate or provisional license. * Have a 50 Hour Driving Certificate signed by your parent or driving instructor affirming that you have completed at least fifty hours of practice driving including 10 hours at night. WHO IS NOT REQUIRED TO HAVE A DRIVER LICENSE? WHO IS NOT ELIGIBLE? * Anyone whose license is currently suspended or revoked in Tennessee, or any other state * Anyone the Commissioner has reason to believe would not be able to operate a motor vehicle safely because of mental or physical disabilities * Anyone who has been proven to be a habitual drunkard or who is addicted to the use of narcotics. * Anyone required to show proof of financial responsibility who has not done so. * Anyone under the age of eighteen who has dropped out of school before graduating, or who does not make "satisfactory progress" in school. * Anyone who is not a U.S. Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident will not qualify for the issuance of a driver license or identification only license. Those who drive and who have never been licensed may be found guilty of a class B misdemeanor. The penalty is a fine up to five hundred dollars ($500) and/or six months in jail. OTHER DRIVER LICENSE SERVICES Anatomical Gifts Organ and tissue donation give the gift of life to someone in serious medical need. There is a shortage of organs and tissues for transplantation. Today, hundreds of Tennesseans fill local waiting lists for these much needed organs and tissues. In order to be on record with the Tennessee Department of Safety as a donor, you must inform us of your decision when you apply for or renew your driver license or certificate for driving. There is a box to check on your application or your renewal notice to indicate whether you do or do not wish to be registered as a donor.
