At the peak the US had 1052 ICBMs (1000 Minuteman & 52 Titan) plus SLBMs, IRBMs, SRBMs, and Cruise Missiles in various lesser quantities. The Minutemans have always been the largest quantity of one type and now even some of them have been retired to meet START limits. Counting all types of missiles capable of carrying a nuclear warhead the US might still have somewhere under 2500, but the exact number is probably classified and most nuclear capable Cruise Missiles and SRBMs are normally armed with just conventional warheads (so they wouldn't count).

In 1955 in the US, the ICBM was still generally considered impractical, nuclear warheads were just too large and heavy for them. Work was in progress on IRBMs and SRBMs. Surface to air, air to air, and air to surface missiles with nuclear warheads were already in stockpile as antiaircraft and standoff weapons.

It is hard to decide who to be the most powerful military in region. The most powerful military must include strategy, geography, technology, experience. There was no country which satisfy all.

- India is the most powerful Air-force and Navy-force in the Asia, but has a low experience in land and jungle fighting.

- People's Republic of China was the largest military in Asia, but not most powerful. Most of China soldiers are forced to join, not willingness

- Japan has high experience in Air fighting but now being controlled by the United States

- Vietnam, though a small country and with less technology, achieved the most experience in land and jungle fighting. It is now reinforcing its military to resist invader from the north, especially its Navy force and Navy hi-tech equipments.

The power in Asia will be unstable for years.
