"no they arent there American" is not entirely accurate. Back in the day (early 70's) when surfer of all colors would head down to Ensenada and points in between to surf they discovered some very cool food that although was new to them was very tasty.
I know because I lived it and I was there...BUT I'm Mexican so what was natural to me was foreign to my fellow beach lovers. Menudo (tripe soup w/hominy) is something that used to be served only on special occasions or weekends and surfers discovered among other things that it was an excellent thing to have for breakfast after a night of swilling down cases of Tecate beer.
Fish/seafood tacos came about because the fisherman saw an opportunity to use the little bits and pieces of fish to support their family. How? Anything is good friend and the taqueros would fry the fish, shrimp and other things in hot lard, after coating it with a delicate batter, smother with finely chopped cabbage and a killer white or "crema" sauce and POW!! Great tacos, cheap to make and the tourists loved it!!
To add to this Anthropologists discovered the use of fish in tacos in the lake region of the Valley of Mexico.
Absolutely they are authentic. When I visited Mexico City my favorite thing to eat there was Tacos Al Pastor (pork tacos). Many times in Mexico they even combine pork beef and chicken in a taco. Hmmmm.
