male turtles usually have a slight indent on the stomach shell to enable tem to mount the female more easlyA female turtle does not have a tail in the back, but a male turtle does have a tail in the back. Below: THIS IS FOR RED SLIDER TURTLES ONLYA FEMALE SLIDER WILL HAVE A SHORTER TAIL AND CLAWS. AMALE WILL HAVE LONG CLAWS AND TAIL.
Male turtles have long claws and tails, concave plastrons, narrow shells, and the cloaca is located far down the tail. Female turtles have short tails and claws, flat or convex plastrons, wide shells, and cloaca is tucked up under the shell at the top or the tail.
To determine if a turtle is a boy or a girl, turn them over. Both male and female turtles have a hole or vent which is called the "cloaca" located on their tail. On male turtles, the cloaca is located further away from the body, closer to the tip of the tail whereas on female turtles, the cloaca is closer to the body.
