There are two factors involved in the recovery of the American alligator. These two factors are conservation (protection) and farming. The first step was banning unrestricted hunting and trapping. And by actually raising the reptiles commercially, and then returning some to the wild after they're bigger (to insure survivability), numbers jumped back up. This 'gator is not in any current danger.
