Yes, they can. A python is capable of taking anything around its size, even when it is a leopard. A big African python of 180 pounds is certainly powerful enough to take an alpha male chimp of 170 pounds. If you don't take out the head large constrictors are a nightmare to deal with. You can be defending from five feet of it, but there is another 15 feet that can be worming its way around you. Once the python is coiled around you your screwed. Chimpanzees are stronger than humans, but they would probably stand about as much chance as we would one on one. When accompanied by their troop they should be safe.

a big enough one could un likely to happen though they would typlacaly people as prey so they would try to eat it but if they did they are not smart enough to get pas sholders
