usually its male ones in mating season females usually are less likely 2 or if there in a defensive mode if all legs are straight and there dewlap is extended and all of the spines on its back are up its in a defensive stance

Recent studies have shown that all monitor lizards produce venom. These studies also suggest some species of iguana produce small amounts of venom as well. I am not sure which ones can.
