Catholic education has been around since the first century, the school system started with the monasteries teaching groups of boys in the sixth century. St. Benedict was the founder of the Order of St. Benedict, so if you had to have a name, I would go with that one, but I have a feeling you want something more recent, in which case you are going to have to be a whole lot more specific, like a country and a century.

he became a saintIf you mean, "How did Saint Benedict go to heaven?" then the answer would have to be that he had faith and believed in God, he lived a just and holy life. and he died in God's friendship, hence he went to Heaven. But, if you are asking, "When and under what circumstances was St. Benedict canonized (officially declared to be a Saint)?" the simple answer is that he was never canonized. Early Saints--Saints recognized as such before about 1200 AD--were not canonized as we understand it today.Today, the Pope or his delegates conduct an investigation as to the apparent sanctity of the candidate, and then the Pope decides if the candidate is to be honored as a Saint. (This is greatly simplified, believe me.) In St. Benedict's time, the people-at-large decided that a dead person ought to be honored as a Saint, and after a while it became commonly accepted that he or she was a Saint, and it was usually confirmed by the local bishop--though some Saints are so early, they seem to always have been accepted universally as Saints, as for instance the Virgin Mary, the Apostles, St. John the Baptist, etc.. In the case of St. Benedict of Nursia, and many others, including St Patrick, St. Jerome, St. Augustine of Hippo, and so forth, the people's choice was ratified or at least accepted by one or more local bishops. The technical name for this is the Latin, Vox Populi Vox Dei, meaning, "The voice of the people is the voice of God." There is a discussion of this in the Article on Beatification and Canonization in the Catholic Encyclopedia, if you are interested. It's online atSt. Benedict became a saint by being a very holy man, he was recognized as such before his death and has been revered for many centuries as a saint. A "Saint" in the Church is just the recognition that someone is in heaven. Saint Benedict lead a holy life, and performed many miracles, about all we know of him is from his Rule and from Book two of the Dialogues by St. Gregory the Great, who was a Benedictine monk before being elected Pope.Links below for a copy of the Rule on line, as well as Book Two from the Dialogues of St. Gregory the Great.
