The Tribe of Judah is a name of a people that followed after Judah the fourth son of Jacob and Leah. His name comes from the word "gratitude "because his mother had tried several times to win the love of her husband who was tricked into marrying her by her father leban. She gave birth to three other children before Judah and when she gave birth to him she named him Judah because this time was not connected to her relationship with her husband but her relationship with God. And so she named him meaning "this time I will praise the Lord" (Genesis 29:32-35)

The Tribe of Judah was one of the Tribes of Israel. At its height, it was the leading tribe of the Kingdom of Judah, and occupied most of the territory of the kingdom, except for a small region in the north east occupied by Benjamin, and an enclave towards the south west which was occupied by Simeon.
