1In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the LORD sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. 2Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. 3And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. 4And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. 5Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. 6Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: 7And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. 8Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me. 9And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. 10Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed. 11Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate, 12And the LORD have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land. 13But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof.

At one time, Isaiah was thought to have foretold the Babylonian Exile, even though he lived almost a century before the time of that event. However, a careful study of the Book of Isaiah reveals that it actually had three main authors: Isaiah himself, who lived during the reigns of Kings Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah of Judah; an anonymous author now known as Second Isaiah, who lived during the Babylonian Exile; and another anonymous author, now known as Third Isaiah, who lived shortly after the Babylonian Exile. Each of the three authors had a very different and distinctive literary style and wrote of different eras.
Following Matthew's Gospel, some Christians believe that Isaiah foretold the virgin birth of Jesus. Not only did the prophet Isaiah not mention Jesus, either by name or in any way that could have referred to him, he never mentioned a virgin birth at all. What he actually wrote in the original Hebrew was, "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, the young woman shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." The words, "the young woman" had been mistranslated into Greek as "a virgin" and this was suggested by the author of Matthew as being a reference to Mary, the mother of Jesus.
The personal name 'Isaiah' is theophoric, which means that it does have a meaning, based on belief in God. The name means 'YAHWEH is salvation', where YAHWEH was an early name for God.
The Christian understanding of the Book of Isaiah has evolved over the centuries, because it is traditionally thought to contain prophecies of Jesus. We can understand the meaning of the Book of Isaiah by stripping away these theological understandings and by looking at the text as it was intended to be read.
Analysis of the Book of Isaiah has shown that chapters 1-39 contain, with numerous additions, the work of Isaiah, son of Amoz, who introduces himself in Isaiah 1:1 and who wrote at the beginning of the period known as the late monarchy. Chapters 40-55 are written in a very different style and deal with events during the Babylonian Exile, while chapters 56-66 contain a somewhat different style to the second and deal with events after the Return from Exile.Isaiah, son of Amoz, preached doom, the proximity of punishment, and the remnant concept. Isaiah of Babylon (Second Isaiah) announced that the punishment was past, suffering was over, and deliverance was at hand. The final section preaches hope and worship of God, in a resurgent land of Judah.
There is no need to look for prophetic meaning in the Book of Isaiah, because any prophecies that are identified belong to the culture and belief system of those who identify them, not to the original Book of Isaiah.
