When asked to define the powers of God, most Christians would say that he is all-powerful (omnipotent) and omniscient (all-knowing). When pressed further, they can identify limits to God's powers with, for example, the devil having considerable autonomy. A popular Christian tradition is that Jesus must fight the devil and his evil army at the armageddon. Although they are sure that Jesus will win, the very need for this battle means that God is not at all omnipotent. There are other examples that show the modern concept of God's power is ambiguous.

The Bible begins with the same ambiguity. The first creation story, in Genesis 1:1-2:4a, portrays God as having the power to simply speak the sun, moon and stars, as well as all living things into existence, although he has to rest - on the seventh day. The second creation story, in Genesis 2:4b-25, portrays God as having limits to his power. He can not create living things out of nothing, but must make Adam and then the animals out of clay. He then makes Eve out of a rib from Adam. Different authors attributed different powers to God at different times in the history of Judah.

Whatever powers God has, the religious answer is that God always was, and was alway omnipotent. The alternative answer is that man gave God these powers, when man created him in legend.
