Benjamin the deacon was imprisoned for a year for his faith and he was released on condition that he never speak about Christianity where he could be heard by any of the royal court. Benjamin then became a street preacher, proclaiming the word any place he could find people. For his obstinant evangelization during the persecutions of king Varanes, he was arrested, tortured and martyred.

Catholic AnswerSt. Benedict, who founded the Benedictine Order, a monastic Order in the Church, was acclaimed a saint many centuries before canonization came into use. The Order of Saint Benedict is probably the largest Order of monks in the Church, and certainly the oldest. The monks of St. Benedict saved civilization in Europe, they saved many books we otherwise would have lost. And all of those holy men and women through the centuries were following in St. Benedict's footsteps. He was considered a very holy man while still alive, and was noted for his miracles, as well.
