There are literally hundreds of priests who have been canonized. Probably the one to mention is St. Jean Marie Vianney (May 8th, 1786 - August 4th, 1859) who is celebrated as the "Cure d'Ars", or parish priest of the small town of Ars, France which is not far from Lyons. He was so outstanding as a parish priest that he has been declared their patron saint.

St. John Vianney struggled in the seminary with Latin and made it to ordination after trials in his studies and a brief stint in the Napoleonic army, from which he deserted. Since Catholicism had been persecuted and priests in hiding since the French Revolution, many areas had no pastors and had become lax in the faith. St. John was assigned to Ars, where he roused the villagers from their torpor through his great devotion and simple sermons. God did great things through St. John Vianney because of his humility and faith, causing miracles, aiding conversions and granting answers to prayer. St. John was noted for his mortifications which were superhuman in their extremes. St. John was most celebrated for his dispensing the sacrament of Confession - something he originally had been denied administering when a young priest because of his poor academics - and was miraculously able to tell people their sins and speak in the penitent's native tongue. People from all over France and Europe came to confess to him and this was enough to merit him an obsession by the devil who used to throw him about his room, set things on fire and attack the cure. Towards the end of his life, St. John was visited by thousands of pilgrims a year and he daily spent over 16 to 18 hours in his confessional, leaving it only to do his basic duties, eat a couple of potatoes for sustenance and sleep. After he died his body was exhumed and was found to be incorrupt. It is on display in a side chapel at Ars. St. John is credited with helping foster devotion to St Philomena, an early Roman martyr, to whom he had a great devotion and to whom he constantly prayed seeking her intercession with God for miracles and aid. His feast day is August 4th on the liturgical calendar.
