Different Hindus will give you different answers. I treat them with reverence; as important texts with origins arguably dating before any other world scriptures, and which were instrumental in the development of my religion (and quite possibly many other religions).
Honestly, I can get more meaning and insight out of the Upanishads most times than out of much of the Vedas, but that could just be where I'm at now.
Rigved is one of the early Holy scriptures of the Hindus. Parts of it are recited as prayers and during festivals and religious occasions.
They call it Dharmagrantha.

Basicclyy i think they care about the planet because its where we live and without the world we do not exist. The trees are extremely important to hindus aswell because like every other living think the trees have their own atman ( soul )
