It would help a lot to know the specific verse in question, but since Revelation 19:10 and 22:8-9 are the two verses in those chapters in which the same thing is mentioned twice I think that those are the ones being questioned.

In those verses, John falls down at the feet of the angel who is showing him things in his vision and makes as if to worship him but the angel tells him both times "No, do not do it!", and his reasoning is that he is just as much a servant of God as John is and is not supposed to be worshiped as God is.

So as the question says "Worship is only for God...", this is true. One of the principle ideals of faith in Christ is that God is the only one worthy of actual worship.

Here are a couple possible reasons for why John did what he did:

The vision John witnessed is an intense revelation, full of images of very awe-inspiring and sometimes terrifying things. Since he would probably have been quite overtaken with being face-to-face with an angel, it is understandable that a human might think it was appropriate to fall down and humble himself before it. John may have been trying to show humility and respect to the Angel in recognition of his holiness.

The final point: in Revelation 19:10, John falls down before the angel after it says "These are the true words of God". So John is falling down and worshiping, having realised that he is hearing a message straight from God. After the angel tells him to worship God instead, the reason is that he (the angel) is a fellow brother and servant along with John. He clarifies that God should receive the worship, for the testimony is from Him. So, in short, John wasn't attempting to commit idolatry or somehow sin against God by intentionally worshiping an angel instead of Him. He exercised his respect for God and His word, and it should be noted that John saw this in a vision. It may be that this part of the vision occurred so that a point could be made to other believers about where their worship should be directed. It also emphasises the importance of the testimony of Jesus.
