Leon R. Kass examines the Book of Genesis in his excellent book The Beginning of Wisdom. He says that the Garden of Eden is a purely mythic place - a mere Utopia, literally 'no place', as indicated by the fact that there can be no single terrestrial place that would serve as the common source of the four widely separated rivers, the Pishon, Gihon, Tigris, and Euphrates that supposedly flowed into it. He says we can learn most from the story by regarding it as a mythical yet realistic portrait of permanent truths about our humanity, rather than as a historical yet idealised portrait of a blissful existence we once enjoyed but lost.
The Garden of Eden can never be restored, because it never really existed. The story of the Garden of Eden was written to teach us moral truths, not historical reality.
