Water is a liquid at room temperature due to the presence of hydrogen bonds between water molecules. The state of a molecule is determined by intermolecular forces, such as dipole-dipole interactions, Van der Waals forces (also called London dispersion forces), and hydrogen bonds.
Water (H2O) is unique in that it has extremely strong hydrogen bonds, but a very low molecular weight (18 grams per mole) . Usually molecules with very low molecular weights are gases at room temperature. Consider for example carbon dioxide (CO2) with a molar mass of 44 g/mole, which is a gas. Other molecules with low molecular weights are nitrogen gas (N2, 28 g/mole), oxygen gas (O2, 32 g/mole), propane (C3H8, 44 g/mole) and butane (C4H10, 58 g/mole). All of these are gases and yet have much higher molecular weights than water does. However, none of these can hydrogen bond, and that is why they are gases, whereas water is a liquid.
Of course, at high temperatures water is a gas (steam) and at low temperatures water is a solid (ice). See the Web Links for more information about intermolecular forces.
Because at room temperature the molocules are vibrating at such a rate so that the water appears to be a liquid. if they sped up, the water would get hotter until eventually it got so hot that the water changed state in to steam. if it gets colder, it slows down and gets harder, until eventually it turns into ice.
Mercury is the only metal that remains liquid at room temperature.
Water is a liquid at room temperature and normal pressure.
Water is liquid at room temperature, but it is not an element. Water is a combination of two elements, Hydrogen and Oxygen, with the formula H2O. Water is not an element. Mercury (Hg) is an element which is liquid at room temperature.
Liquid
No it is a liquid
Yes, white liquid glue is water-soluble and will dissolve in room temperature water. It will mix with the water to form a solution.
Water exhibits hydrogen bonding
It means whether the substance in question is solid, liquid or gas at normal room temperature, so you could assume that about 20 degrees celsius. Oxygen is a gas at room temperature Water is a liquid at room temperature Iron is a solid at room temperature.
Water (H2O) is in a liquid state at room temperature (around 20-25Β°C).
