Jews were targeted by some pretty brutal persecution during the Middle Ages, and at such critical times as the Black Death, there were hundreds of Jewish communities that were wiped out, with the residents killed and in some cases all burned alive.
Usually when Jews were persecuted, they were simply harassed.
There were a number of times when countries such as England and France expelled them, and in these cases the debts people (such as the kings) had to them were not paid. The Jews were simply required to leave and lost what was owed them. In some places, the debts to the Jews were discounted, and the remainder was owed to the crown. Clearly there were strong financial motives for kings to do this.
Expelled Jews were often invited into areas such as Germany and, later, Russia, where the leadership saw the clear advantages that came with the skills the Jews had. In particular, there were a lot of highly skilled Jewish doctors, and many areas benefited from their presence.
An interesting counter question might be what happened to the countries that expelled the Jews. Typically, such nations suffered quite a lot from a decline in services Jews had provided, especially in finance and medical care.
They were persecuted in Western Europe and moved eastwards to Poland, which was very tolerant in the Middle Ages and early modern times.
Jews were being persecuted all over Europe, King Kazimirez the Great offered them his country as a safe place to live. They were persecuted in Western Europe and moved eastwards to Poland, which was very tolerant in the Middle Ages and early modern times.
The Catholic Church in the Middle Ages were the primary source of persecution during the Middle Ages. They persecuted the Jewish people, Protestants, anyone that did not believe in the Bible, and anyone they thought was a witch. The Catholic Church and Christians persecuted and killed Jews because they blamed the Jews for Jesus' death. The Jews were often blamed for wrongdoings in the community and Christians used that as an excuse to persecute and kill them. Both the Catholic Church and Jews persecuted Christians (Protestant and other new denominations) during the Middle Ages because they strayed away from typical beliefs. Another group of people that were persecuted were people believed to be witches. They were hated by the Catholic Church and Christians and thought to be evil and working with the devil. People who were accused to be witches were tortured until they confessed. This probably led to a false confession the majority of the time.
