the catholic church changed the Sabbath day (the day of rest and worship, also the 4th commandment) from Saturday to Sunday so that the Pagans would start coming to church...it was all about making a compromise with the Pagans so that every one could worship together. The Bible says, though, that no one can change Gods law, but that's exactly what happened when the changed the day of worship. Saturday is the original day because it is the 7th day, which is when God had finished creating the universe and rested on the 7th day.
from The Catechism of the Catholic Church, second edition, English translation 19942180 The precept of the Church specifies the law of the Lord more precisely: "On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass." (Code of Canon Law, can. 1247) "The precept of participating in the Mass is satisfied by assistance at a Mass which is celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite either on the holy day or on the evening of the preceding day." (Code of Canon Law, can 1248 section 1)
2181 The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. (emphasis added) For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. (Cf. Code of Canon Law, can. 1245) Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin.
AnswerYes, it does. Going to Mass on Sunday, the "Lord's Day" designated for rest and worship of God with the community is required of every Catholic. To not do so is to commit a mortal (grave) sin to which confession is required to retain the state of grace with God.Going on any other day is a very nice thing to do, but isn't required.
AnswerBecause it is in the Ten Commandments:The 3th commandment: Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Six days you shall labor, and do all your work;
but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God;
in it you shall not do any work, you, or your son,
or your daughter, your manservant,
or your maidservant or your cattle,
or the sojourner who is within your gates;
for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them,
and rested the seventh day;
therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and hallowed it.
Sabbath was changed to Sunday*

The Mass on Palm Sunday (which would include the Vigil Mass on Saturday) usually lasts a few minutes longer both because of the distribution of Palms, and that fact that the entire Passion is read at the Gospel. The Passion comprises a good portion of any of the first three Gospels and runs for many pages.
Sunday is a holy day of obligation and we do participate in Mass for prayer and worship but neither the Holy Scriptures or Holy Tradition state that formal religious education must happen on Sunday. Catholic religious education can be taught on any day of the week. The day is determined by each parish according to its own needs.

Firstly, they usually read two Gospel readings. Near the start of mass they read the Gospel about the entrance on Palm Sunday of Jesus into Jerusalem. Later they read the story of his passion from Holy Thursday and Good Friday. The second of these Gospels is considerably longer than any other Sunday Gospel.
That is called gravity.
