The star and crescent is a new innovation that has been adopted in Islam passed by the Persians or/and Greeks. Somehow like Christians use their symbol as a cross, some Muslims use the crescent and star as Islams symbol on top of the dome. Some scholars of Islam even think that it should be forbidden because there is no evidence that the crescent is a symbol prescribed by Islam and so they think it is better not to use it.

You would recognize a mosque because it has a round thing on the top.

nothing. You cant get to the top of mt. moon
most likely on the top of the of the moon Edit: To previous answer... There is no 'top of the moon'. To one side of the earth (the bottom) the top would be different then the other side of the moon (the top).
Its suppose to be a crescent moon but its just a sign we have. We arent suppose to worship it and its not suppose to be symbolic or anything
The tower is called a minaret, and the building is called a mosque or a masjid. The minaret is used by the muezzin, who climbs to the top and announces the beginning of a prayer.
